PRESIDENT’S NEW YEAR MESSAGE

GMS ON THE MARCH TOWARDS NEW HORIZONS

Once again, it is my privilege to greet you, on my own behalf, and, on behalf of my colleagues in the Managing Committee of the GMS, on the ensuing New Year 2008. May the God Almighty shower on you His blessings and bestow on you continued good Health, Happiness and Harmony in the new year.

For the success of any people, be it a nation or a community, it is essential to have, a strong organization, a vehicle for communication and interaction, rules and regulations, and a forum for periodical get-togethers and assemblies. Fortunately, we, Mohyals, have all these requisites in the form of the over-a-century old General Mohyal Sabha, the oldest publishing monthly magazine in India “Mohyal Mitter”, an equally old written Constitution, amended from time to time, to move with the times and periodical assemblies and get-togethers viz., Conferences, Melas/Milans/Meets etc.

Our founding fathers established the General Mohyal Sabha on a very sound footing. It was nourished for over fifty years with many achievements such as establishment of different Funds, grant of financial aid to widows, scholarships to deserving Mohyal students, framing of Rules and Regulations, bringing out a written Constitution of the Sabha, finalizing “Dastur-al-amal Mohyali” and, above all, the establishment of Mohyal Ashram at Lahore. Unfortunately, because of the holocaust brought by partition of the country in August 1947, there was a great setback and everything came to a stand still, and GMS had to re-start everything from scratch.

There was almost no progress for about two decades but the Sabha, somehow limped on, and certain Mohyal veterans tried their best to keep the Mohyali flag flying. Fortunately, and by God’s grace, in the last two decades, GMS has been able to garner financial resources as well as man power and has made rapid strides by setting up and running the Mohyal Ashram and Sewa Sadan at Haridwar, starting of the prestigious MERIT, renovation of Mohyal Ashram at Inderpuri and its utilization as a guest house for visiting Mohyals. All these are running efficiently as symbols of the progress of the biradari. But the real progress, to my mind, has been the evolvement and awakening in the biradari through the length and breadth of the country. It gives me immense pleasure to see the zeal and enthusiasm in the younger generation and the credibility of GMS has increased manifold, as a result of which the donations are pouring in and your apex body is in a position to involve itself in more and more social welfare activities of the community.

There are over 200 widows, who are receiving financial aid of Rs. 500/- each per month from it regularly. Financial relief on the same scale is being given to 24 disabled and needy brothers and sisters. Over 30 deserving students are getting scholarships of Rs.150 to Rs. 1,500/- per month, depending on the level of their studies. Financial assistance of varying amounts has also been given to many local sabhas, as grant, for construction of their Bhavans. The local sabhas are also given Rs. 5,100/- as “shagun” on their annual melas. On occasions, GMS has given one-time assistance at the time of marriage of Mohyal girls and for the establishment in life of some needy Mohyals.

The above are not the only activities of the GMS. It has been celebrating its Foundation Day, as Mohyal Diwas, regularly, for the last three years. So is the case with Prathibhashalee Vidyarthi Samman Sammelan, Youth Camps and Matrimonial Conclaves. The effort has been to involve as many young Mohyals as possible in the activities of the GMS and encourage them to become future leaders of the community. A Mohyal Nursery School has been started at Dehradun. Through the AGM and the EGM held in March 2007, the Constitution of the GMS has been comprehensively revised as per the needs of the Modern Era. To safeguard the assets of the Sabha two powerful Trusts, one the Board of (Sarprast) Trustees and the other, the Mohyal Foundation Trust, have been formed by making most eminent Mohyals as Trustees.

A drive has been launched for enrolling many permanent members of the GMS. For closer relationship with Mohyal brothers and sisters, Birthday Greeting Cards, and Greeting Cards on Marriage Anniversaries are being sent regularly to the permanent members. The move has been welcomed and appreciated all-round. The permanent members also eagerly look forward to the beautiful, laminated, Mohyal Identity Cards being issued to them.

That is not the end of the matter of achievements. We are at the launching pad of many more projects. On our shelf are projects like a Vocational Training Institute in the name of the late Padamshri Sunil Dutt, Mohyal Ashram at Kurukshetra, a residential Senior Secondary School, an Old Age Home at Dehradun, Installation of Pratimas of Mohyal Rishies at the Mohyal Ashram, Haridwar .

To achieve all these and make the Mohyal Community progress further, it is incumbent on the youth of the Community to be involved more and more in the affairs of the GMS. The base of the Sabha is also to be made stronger at the grass root level by enrolling more and more permanent members. The population of Mohyals is around 5-6 lakhs and it would be ideal if at least one member of each family becomes a permanent member, so that Mohyal Mitter reaches every Mohyal family and the entire community gets totally involved.

We should not rest on our laurels. There are many more things to be done and goals to be achieved. I am sure that, with the active cooperation of you all, especially the youth, and not to forget, the ladies, the GMS will accomplish all these and scale new heights.

This, then, is my message for the New Year to my beloved Mohyal brethren and sisters to strengthen your parent body, come, join us in our journey towards hope, progress and development in all fields.

Wishing you all, once again, a very Happy New Year.

JAI MOHYAL

Yours brotherly,

(B.D. Bali)

SHRI P.L. BALI DEPARTS FOR HIS CELESTIAL

ABODE

SHARADHANJALI

The General Mohyal Sabha announces with profound grief and sorrow the demise of our Finance Secretary and Mohyal stalwart Shri P.L. Bali, on 18th December, 2007. His cremation the same day was attended by a very large number of his relatives, friends, neighbours and Mohyal biradari. GMS Sr. Vice President Shri O.P. Mohan laid a wreath on behalf of the GMS President, Rzd B.D. Bali and members of the GMS Managing Committee, who showered rose petals on the body. Rzd B.D. Bali (out of Delhi) when informed expressed deep shock and disbelief at the sad news.

Wreaths were also placed by several individuals. Rzd B.D. Bali had earlier visited the hospital to inquire about the condition of Shri P.L. Bali.

He was born on August 15, 1937 at Sherwan Village, Tehsil Abbottabad, Dist. Hazara. His father Sh. Faqir Chand Bali, who was an inspector of police at that time, died in an accident when Shri Pishori Lal Bali was only 7-8 years old. Besides himself, he had two sisters.

The whole family under the guardianship of his mother, Smt. Sita Devi, migrated to India at the time of partition. Sh. P.L. Bali was a small child and through dint of hard work, passed his matriculation examination from the East Punjab University securing 7th position. At that time East Punjab State included the present Himachal Pradesh and Haryana also.

Shri. P.L. Bali joined the service in the State Bank of India and retired as Manager from the Main Branch of the State Bank at Parliament Street, New Delhi in the year 1997. He served at many places in India and with his sweet and sober character and mild manners was able to win everybody’s heart at all these places. He was a person with a distinct personality and never wavered in discharging the responsibilities assigned him. A versatile personality, Shri P.L. Bali was of very amiable nature, and a person of impeccable integrity, an invaluable asset of the fraternity. After retirement from service, Sh. P.L. Bali had been devoting time to the social service activities. He had been very active not only in the functioning of the General Mohyal Sabha and the Mohyal Educational Society but also as Secretary of the Mohyal Sabha Yamunapar. He was Life Member both of the GMS and the Mohyal Educational Society and also, on occasions, acted as Election Officer of the MES. Even with his multifarious activities in these three organizations, he could find time to look after the management of the Sanatan Dharam Mandir in his locality of East Azad Nagar, where he lived.

In the General Mohyal Sabha he was assigned the crucial portfolio of Finance Secretary. He was very active in the management of the Mohyal Ashram and Sewa Sadan at Haridwar and the Mohyal Nursery School at Dehradun. He was also a member of the GMS Interaction Committee and in that capacity he had close contact with the large number of Local Sabhas. He was representing the General Mohyal Sabha in the on-going Litigation at Dehradun relating to the property bequeathed to the GMS by the late Smt. Kaushalya Rani Bali.

Shri P.L. Bali leaves behind him his wife Smt. Sheila Rani Bali, four sons and their wives– Ravinder-Anita, Umesh-Arti, Rajesh-Lovely and youngest son Neeraj, daughter Anju-Anil (son-in-law) and nine grandchildren. His three sons and one daughter are all setteled in life. The youngest son is unmarried. Shri. P.L. Bali had opened a Trust “ Shri Faqir Chand Bali, Sita Devi Bali Widow Fund Trust” with the GMS to perpetuate the memory of his late parents.

We have lost a dedicated and devoted colleague. The void created by his demise cannot ever be filled. In deep reverence we pray to the Almighty God to grant peace to the noble soul and give strength to his family to bear with fortitude their irreparable loss. The best tribute to Bali sahib would be for his children to imbibe the lofty ideals of their dear father.

THE 2ND GRAND MOHYAL MATRIMONIAL MELA

HIGH APPRECIATION FOR GMS INITIATIVE

They came in strength to fulfill life’s duty, responsibilty and ambition to marry their children within the community. And what better opportunity to achieve their objective than to attend the 2nd Grand Matrimonial Mela organized by GMS at Mohyal Foundation on 9th December, 2007.

Except for the formal inauguration and brief address by GMS President Rzd. B.D. Bali the function was purely and strictly business-like. The weather was balmy, friendly and the general ambience par excellence, exuding the fragrance of amiability and fellow feelings, of close kinship and oneness.

Parents/Gurdians companing horoscopes the computer

The venue was appropriately decorated the main theme being about the last matrimonial mela (2006) and other relevant details. Three main counters were set up:

1) for registration purposes,

2) for distribution of data lists,

3) manned exclusively by ladies.

For all the guests, elaborate arrangements had been made for serving breakfast. The green signal for the function was the hoisting of the Mohyal flag by Rzd. B.D. Bali amidst chorous of JAI MOHYAL slogan, followed by Mohyal Prayer led by Smt. Krishan Lata Chhibber, Secretary GMS Istri Wing and Convenor of the 2nd Mohyal Matrimonial Mela.

Volunteers at registration

There was a stream of gents and ladies, some accompanied by their children, come with high expectations hoping to find compatible matches for their eligible children. More than 700 persons attended the function. This is the barometer showing that our brethren are keen to marry their children in the community.

The complexities of alliances within the community are critical. But given perseverance and mutual compromises the solution will emerge. GMS has taken the inititative in organizing the matrimonial mela on a scale and gambit for the second consecutive year to resolve this problem facing the biradari. And there is general praise for this inititative.

In his brief welcome address GMS President Rzd. B.D. Bali extended a very warm and cordial welcome to all the brothers and sisters. He stated that they were enthused and encouraged by the success of last year’s matrimonial mela and decided to hold one this year too. He said that the last mela had resulted in 75 alliances amongst the community, and perhaps more of which GMS was not informed. “The GMS has gone far ahead and there is a new awakening amongst the community. There is a resurgence in the rank and file of the community to stand united and consolidate our ranks. Today, by the grace GOD ALMIGHTY we have the manpower and the resources at our command. GMS came into being almost 117 years ago and today its credentials are worthy of emulation and pride. I would request you all to become GMS Life Members,Pratisht Members and Patrons and above all each Mohyal household must subscribe to Mohyal Mitter and spread the message of love and compassion. As I stand before you today in all humility I bow my head and invoke the blessings of Almighty God on behalf of the entire fraternity.”

Matching of Horoscopes by Pandits

Bali Sahib stated that this year data had been received from eligible boys and girls some of whom were professionals, highly qualified Engineers, Doctors, MBA, M.Com, LLB, Hotel Management, Accountants, Teachers, Graduates, entrepreneurs, own business, own Cinema Hall. Beside the above, data of Boys/Girls from USA,U.K, Canada, Spain and almost all parts of India have been received. The Bio-Data has divorcees and widows too. We had persons from all walks of life and from various places as far as Secunderabad, Gwalior, Dehradun, Moradnagar, Faridabad, Gurgaon, Agra, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Jhansi Cantt, Yamuna Nagar, Chandigarh, Ambala, Karnal, Ghaziabad, Meerut, Palwal, Noida, Jagadhari and various places from New Delhi.

Mrs. Krishan Lata Chhibber along with her energetic husband Shri S.K. Chhibber and assisted by Shri Vikas Mohan tirelessly called out the names of the individuals to come up to the stage to meet with other gents/ladies wishing to establish personal contact and for exchange of information, later culminating in both parties consulting the three pandits who were comparing the horoscopes and also for consulting and comparing horoscopes by computers arranged by courtesy Dr. Ratan K. Datta. Mrs. Krishan Lata Chhibber was so absorbed, nay, obsessed that she declined to take a breather, even for a minute, her indefatigble stamina envious indeed:

One of the parents from Faridabad told us their negotiations with the other party were on positive lines and both were from Faridabad and in two other cases from Indore and Kishan Garh we received telephonic messages that their alliance had been finalized. About 250 computer-and 225 pandit-matching of horoscopes was done this time. The list of approximately 403 eligible children was received by the due date and about 75 names were received on the spot.

The holding of the function could not have been possible without the blessings of Secretary General D.V. Mohan, Shri D.R. Chhibber and Smt. Amba Bali, Convenor of Matrimonial Committee and the voluntary services by Shri Vijay Kumar Chhibber from Sahidabad Sabha, Mrs. Surbhi Mehta, Shri Yogesh Mehta, Shri Vikas Mohan, Shri Naresh Datta, from MS Rohini–Pitampura Sh. Vimal Chhibber, Mrs. Swaran Lata Chhibber, Shri Harish Mehta, Smt. Kusum Mehta from MS Dwarka Shri Ramesh Datta, Shri Balram Datta, Shri R.K. Chhibber, Shri Surjit Mehta from MS Faridabad, Shri Ashwani Bali, Mrs. Anita Bali, Shri Rajeev Chhibber, Deep Mala, Shri Kamal Bali, Shri Vimal Bali, from Mohyal Sabha Mehrauli. We are thankful to all the Mohyal volunteers.

The supplementary list of data received was also made available. We sincerely hope and request parents/guardians to intimate GMS on engagement/marriage of their children.

Gracing the function were a number of ladies including Mrs. Nita Bali, wife of Rzd. B.D. Bali.

Best wishes from GMS to all parents/guardians for the success of their wards through the above Mela and New Year Greetings.

NATIONALISM THE NECTAR OF LIFE

A Nation comprises of different sects and religions which make a country. Nationalism is the nectar of life which enables a man to make the supreme sacrifice. It is absolutely necessary if we are to live peacefully or otherwise on this Globe. It compels a man to resist all temptations and defy opposition even against numerical odds. One who is imbued with nationalism considers his country to be supreme and above all wordly things.

What we do or act has a great bearing on the country. India was called a “Golden Bird’’ and attracted many other countries like Britain, France and Portugal to occupy it. Our country being abundant in all natural resources was the main cause of their greed.

Portuguese occupied Goa, Daman and Diu, while the French-Pondichery and Trichanapally. The Britishers were successful in establishing their foothold in Madras and Bengal and finally succeeded in occupying the whole country, since the country lacked nationalism in those days and was full of traitors, and the rulers were weak. The British are the highest nationalists and no matter how tiny is their country, it was able to rule about 100 countries of the world. It was truly said that “the sun did not set in the British Empire.’’

The continuous British rule over our country for about 200 years gave birth to patriotism and nationalism and to patriots like Shahid-e-Azam Bhagat Singh, Raj Guru, Sukhdev, Ram Prasad Bismil and many others. This compelled the British to succumb to pressure and ultimately made the country independent on Aug. 15, 1947.

As true nationalists, it is our utmost duty that we should be equally concerned about its welfare by sacrificing our own interest. Those countries which have the highest sense of nationalism, can never be made slaves, no matter how big or small they are. Countries like Britain and Japan, though small in size, have the highest nationalism and that is why they are able to establish their identity and are considered great powers, self- sufficient and economically sustainable.

If the above spirit prevails in every citizen of our country, the country can never be made slave again and will certainly command great respect amongst the nations of the world.

CINE LEGEND
R.S. CHOUDHARI
(08-06-1903 To 22-08-1973

The late Shri Rama Shankar Choudhari was a versatile Wizard and a polestar of the Hindi Film Industry. He was “The Movie Mughal’’ of Cinema from silent to talkies era. R.S. Choudhari stands out as a pioneer and tallest personality in comparison to numerous Mohyals in the film industry, viz: Geeta Bali, Om Prakash, Pachhi, Sunil Dutt, Anand Bakshi, Sanjay Dutt, J.P. Dutta, O.P. Dutta to name a few. He was a director, script writer, production designer. Between 1924 and 1955 he was responsible for the release of over 35 successful films.

Afer graduating from Allahabad University, he came to Mumbai in 1924 and joined the Imperial Film Company of the late Ardeshar Irani and in the same year he directed his first film “Devdas’’ and the next year the famous classic “Prithvi Vallabh’’. Later he made box office hits of the silent era ‘Anarkali’ and ‘Madhuri’ in 1928 starring Sulochana and D Billimoria, for the Imperial Films Company and overnight Sulochana became a super star. Film magazine ‘Star and Style’ May 13-26, 1983 on page 27-29 wrote:- Ruby Mayers a girl of a humble Jewish family visited Imperial Film Company with her friends. She was so beautiful that she was immediately engaged at a very hefty salary of Rs.350/- per month in 1925. Ruby did 2 films with director M Bhavani ‘Veerbala’ in 1925 & ‘Telephone Girl’ in 1926. But after the success of ‘Anarkali’ & ‘Madhuri’ in 1928 directed by R S Choudhari, her salary was fixed at Rs.5000/- per month, when, the then governor of Bombay Sir Roger Lumely was drawing Rs.4500 per month.......it was R.S. Chouhdhari who renamed Ruby’s as Sulochana, meaning ‘Beautiful Eyes’.’’

Some of the other famous titles made by Choudhari Sahib of the silent era were ‘Meera’ ‘Aasha’ 1926. ‘Hamara Hindustan’, ‘Khuda Ki Shan’, ‘Temple Bells’ etc. In 1935 he made the famous ‘Aaj Kal’, starring Jal Merchant and Zubeida and ‘Daku ki Ladki’ starring Geeta Bali. He also tackled purposeful themes, both on political and social events of the era. ‘The Wrath of God’ was the first film on Gandhian non-violence. ‘Roti’ a film on socialistic ideology, was banned by the British. ‘Sach Hai’, starring Moti Lal and Rose was the first film on untouchability. Under the banner of Amar Films he made jubilee hits ‘Aankh Micholi’ starring Nalini Jaywant and ‘Gaali’ featuring Karan Diwan and Manju. Choudhari Sahib wrote the story and screen play of all his directorial ventures. He also wrote the story of the musical block buster ‘Rattan’ (1944).

Choudhari Sahib was a hard task master and a perfectionist. Zubeida the stunt queen of the film industry, stated in ‘Cine Blitz’ May 1976, page 49 “.....I once had to do a crying scene, the director R.S. Choudhari said “no glycerine’’. ‘But Boss I can’t do it’, Boss said ‘Try, I’ll throw my shoes and that will be the cue for action’ I tried but no tears came, and then, thud, something struck my face, the shoe, I was in panic, the tears came, the Boss called ‘cut, that was the shot I wanted.’’ Further she says, “..... the famous producer director Mehboob Khan was an extra at that time and used to hang around with paans, waiting for director R.S. Choudhari to ask for one. Filmfare May 16, 1952 page 39, states R.S. Chouhdari engaged Mehboob as a ‘clapper boy’ in the industry.

Mohyal History (2006) page 282 states: He had the distinction of being associated with the first Indian ‘talkie’ ‘Alam Ara’ and the first Indian colour film ‘Aan’ under Mehboob’s banner. He was a buddy of Mehboob and wrote for all his films like Aurat, Roti, Aan, Mother India.
Mama jee (Choudhari Sahib) also wrote the scripts for memorable films, ‘Bawre Nain’ ‘Anari’, ‘Pat Rangi’, ‘Nagina’ and the famous musical block buster ‘Baiju Bawra’.

For commemorating the Silver Jubilee of the talkie era he was requested to write for Bharat Jyoti Magazine dated 13.11.1955. The grateful Editor ‘Ajab’ says “what Choudhari wrote was not an article but a story of the birth pangs of the Indian Talkies. A grand flashback, down the memory lane, written in flawless English, characteristic of the stalwart who was a mine of information and a walking encyclopaedia of the film industry......the original manuscript, beautifully handwritten is fit to be preserved in the archives, it remains to this day the most memorable flashbacks in the annals of film journalism in India.’’

The bereaved parents Smt. Sunita Dutta and Sh. Subhash Dutta of G-99, School-cum Canal Area, Nilokheri had opened an Educational M.Sc. (Physics) Trust with GMS in the sweet memory of Vikas Dutta.

Earlier they have contributed Rs.18000/- for this Trust, for brilliant students and have now contributed Rs.2000/- more. The younger brother Sh. Amit Dutta has also contributed Rs.2000/- in the sweet memory of his elder brother Sh. Vikas Dutta for the Vikas Dutta Memorial Educational (M.Sc.)
