IN the annals of Mohyal History, the name of Major Amarnath Chhibber will be written in letters of gold, for this gallant officer is no ordinary person, but one of sterling qualities with a golden heart, of noble thought and noble ideals, born to serve humanity, one who has left a rich legacy of selfless service. Major Amarnath Chhibber has left an indelible imprint on the sands of time. A brave soldier, he has left a legacy for posterity, for generations and generations to come. His compassion, his care, his love and his concern for the fraternity is incomparable. A man of lofty ideals and high moral values, he is indeed a true karma yogi. mitter_images/may08 thy fragrance spread its aroma, the message of goodwill and brotherhood, of one with a pure, brave heart and strong will power.

Major Amarnath Chhibber had a premonition of his impending departure to complete his earthly sojourn. His appointment with the Supreme Lord was preordained and he bid us all adieu on 14th March, 2008, leaving us the poorer.

People cling to their wordly possessions, but this servant of the Lord left all his wealth and assets to the General Mohyal Sabha, of which he was a passionate adherent, a prominent member and a pillar of strength. He had abiding faith, and trust in the integrity of the Apex Body. The GMS shall ever remain beholden to our Major Sahib who has earned the deep gratitude of the entire fraternity for the rich legacy, so magnanimously bequeathed to it.

His life partner Smt. Nirmal Kumari Chhibber stood by him stoically in all his decisions taken for the ultimate divine cause in the service of humanity.

Major Sahib, mitter_images/may08 you find absolute peace and solace at the divine feet of the Maker.

The best tribute to Maj. Amar Nath Chhibber is for us all to strive to transform his vision and dream of nishakam sewa for the betterment of the fraternity in all its manifestations.

My life, O Lord is in Thine hands,

You know what’s good for me;

Your silent whisper I can hear,

But You, I cannot see.

a gracious gesture

Rzd. B.D. Bali and Mrs. Nita Bali were invited for dinner alongwith few other friends by Mr. Satish Bali and Dr. Prema Bali at their elegant house located in Greater Kailash-II Enclave, New Delhi. The Dinner, of course, was very lavish but it was a very gracious act of the couple to present a cheque for Rupees One Lac to Rzd. B.D. Bali for Mohyal Ashram, Haridwar. It transpired that they had visited the Ashram at Haridwar some time back and were very pleased with its environment, ambience and the service and decided to donate this handsome amount for the Ashram to be utilized as deemed fit.

Mr. Satish Bali is a very reputed Architect and Dr. Prema Bali has recently retired from AIIMS as Head of the Department. Their only son Mr. Ashish Bali is also an Architect and has just returned after spending 10 years professional career in California (U.S.A.). It was very touching for Ashish to tell Bali Sahib that he is always available for any service to the community.

While we are very grateful for the excellent gesture we wish the couple and their entire family best of health and all’–round prosperity.

top accolade for city man

Raj-Region’s Top Learner

A well-known Derby man is to be honoured in this year’s Adult Learners’ Week Awards.

Raj Bali (69), of Pear Tree Crescent, will receive an East Midlands Individual Learning Award from the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (Niace).

In its 13th year, Adult Learners’ Week, from mitter_images/may08 15 to mitter_images/may08 21, gives an opportunity for education and training providers to show what courses they have to offer.

Mr. Bali was nominated for his award, which will be given to him in a ceremony at Derby’s Council House next Wednesday, by Pratibha Hindocha, from Derby College.

He has been taking courses at the college which, according to Mrs. Hindocha, have “improved his speaking English and resulted in a boost of confidence’’.

His courses have concentrated on learning team building, leadership and presentation skills.

Mr. Bali is a member of 23 voluntary and community organisations.

He is President of the Geeta Bhavan Hindu temple, a Governor at Redwood Junior School and a member of the Race Equality Council.

He is also the Founder Member and Director of the Open Centre in Pear Tree Road and a member of the Board of Trustees at the new Mulit-Faith Centre, being built at the University of Derby, Kedleston Road.

Mr. Bali is modest about his achievements and says that time to devote to everything can be a problem.

He said: “It has been one of the barriers to learning.”

“I have been working full-time and managing a family, as my wife has been ill and we have young children to look after.”

“I’ve devoted my evenings and early mornings to voluntary work and I’m involved in helping the community to develop.

“Linguistic ability in English, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu, Gujarati and Swahili has helped to further my communication skills in negotiations and meetings.’’

Mr. Bali also thinks that everyday life teaches people a great deal and helps to enhance skills just by being involved.

Mr. Bali will be presented with £200, which can be used towards future learning, at the awards ceremony.

A spokesman for Niace said: “Our selection panels look for learners who have improved their lives or the lives of others through learning, have maintained their other commitments and have overcome difficult circumstances to pursue learning.”

“Mr. Bali’s achievement fitted all these criteria and he deserves his award.’’

They were informed that the plot was in a predominantly Muslim area and the Agra Development Authority had offered a bigger plot of 170 sq. yds. in the same area, in lieu of the already allotted plot. But the local sabha has requested the Authority for allotting a similar-sized plot (of 120 sq. yds.) in another area, near the Taj Mahal, at the same price, which was likely to come through. Shri D.V. Mohan informed that Rzd. B.D. Bali and Smt. Nita Bali had entered the Golden Jubilee year of their marriage on the 1st March 2008. The couple had been married on the 1st March 1959.

The announcement was followed by a flood of greetings, bouquets and flowers from members to the ‘anniversary couple’. (Smt. Nita Bali also was present on this special occasion.) Encomiums were paid to Rzd. B.D. Bali by all those present.

Shri G.L. Datta ‘Josh’ recalled his association with Rzd. B.D. Bali from the time he was elected President in August 1978. During these years, he had learnt a lot from him. In his inimitable style, Shri ‘Josh’ recited some urdu shers, suiting the occasion, lauding the services rendered and being rendered to the Mohyal community by Rzd. B.D. Bali. He also recalled as to how the Mohyals had been a scattered community in 1955 and how due to the efforts of the late Shri N.N. Mohan, they had been united under the umbrella of GMS. He congratulated the couple from the depth of his heart and wished them many more years of wedded bliss. To him, the beaming and happy couple still looked young. He also noted that the weather that day had turned ‘bahar’ i.e., spring, to suit the occasion.

Shri S.K. Chhibber IAS (Retd.) said that he had known Rzd. B.D. Bali for the last many years and what impressed him most was the fact that he had all the qualities of a great leader. Shri S.K. Chhibber could not think of any person other than Rzd. Bali, who was free from any controversy. He thanked God Almighty for his kindness in giving us a leader like him. The job of President GMS, when he had been elected, had not been an easy one for him. He had to face the challenge of a parallel GMS. Nobody knew where GMS will go. But Rzd. B.D. Bali overcame all challenges, with service as his motto, and brought up the GMS to what it is today. All those who had challenged him, with only personal aggrandizement as their motive, lay by the roadside. Inevitably, there were factions within the organization. But his leadership overcame all these controversies. There were ups and downs. For the last few years, GMS has been on the upward march and was prospering. The Mohyal community has been lucky to have him at the helm. Many had used him for the community’s benefit, but there were also others, who tried to misuse him. Rzd. B.D. Bali was good at public relations and a good judge of character, which traits are not possessed by many. He was unique and Shri S.K. Chhibber, while expressing his personal admiration to him, wished him many more long years of service to the community.

Shri P.K. Datta described Rzd. B.D. Bali and Smt. Nita Bali as a magnetic couple. Shri O.P. Mohan narrated the recent Varanasi experience to bring home the point that Rzd. B.D. Bali was ever willing to come forward and help any good cause. Dr. Rattan Datta called Rzd. B.D. Bali as his ‘temporal leader’ and wished the couple well. Others who congratulated him included Shri Darshan Lal Bali, Dr. Ashok Lav, Shri N.D. Datta, Smt. Amba Bali, Lt. Col. BKL Chhibber (Retd.), Shri Rit Mohan, Shri O.P. Mohan of Rohini, Shri S.C. Mehta of West Zone, Shri Gulshan Vaid, Smt. Krishan Lata Chhibber and Shri Ram Sharup Dutt. Shri Sandeep Datta of Janakpuri extracted a promise from Rzd. B.D. Bali and Mrs. Bali that there would be a grander celebration of their Golden Jubilee anniversary next year.

Responding to the accolades, Rzd. B.D. Bali stated that he was overwhelmed and felt humble by the invaluable gift of love showered by the members. Rzd. B.D. Bali felt as if they had been married only yesterday. His association with the GMS over the last 25 years in the service of the community had been eventful. The GMS had dared to reach the sky and succeeded. On this occasion, he gratefully recalled the contribution of the late Smt. Brij Rani Vaid, whose contribution of Rs. 17 lakhs formed the seed money for the construction of the Mohyal Foundation, which had been foundering for lack of funds. But for this invaluable contribution, the GMS mitter_images/may08 not have achieved such lofty heights. Rzd. B.D. Bali also lauded the sane advice given to him at that time by Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Z.C. Bakshi for continuing with the “Amarnath and Brij Rani Memorial Trust” with the equivalent contribution given by the late Smt. Brij Rani Vaid which today holds a corpus of about 22 lacs.

He also greeted Bhai Mahavir, Shri S.K. Chhibber and Lt. Gen. Z.C. Bakshi (Retd.), the most decorated soldier, and thanked them for their presence on this occasion. Bhai Mahavir was the descendant of the great Mohyals and patriots like Bhai Mati Dass, Bhai Sati Dass and Bhai Paramanand. Rzd. B.D. Bali also recalled the contribution and help given by Bhai Mahavir, then Governor of Madhya Pradesh, at the time of the last All India Mohyal Conference held in Bhopal in January 2003. At his instance, the members gave a standing ovation to the trio of Mohyal stalwarts, viz., Bhai Mahavir, Shri S.K. Chhibber IAS (Retd.) and Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Z.C. Bakshi.

He thanked everybody, on his own and his wife’s behalf, for their love and affection and for the sentiments expressed by them and added that he would try to justify their expectations from him. These had given him further fuel to serve the community. He promised that he would continue to serve the community for as long as he was alive.

On this happy occasion, he announced a donation of Rs. 4900/- to the GMS to mark their 49th Wedding Anniversary.

Towards the end of the meeting, Shri S.N. Datta and Shri D.V. Mohan also added their greetings and encomiums to Rzd. B.D. Bali and Smt. Nita Bali, before everyone dispersed to partake in the grand lunch hosted by the ‘Jubilee Couple’.
