| On one side of scale of our society is a woman and on the other, heavy articles, of dowry which out-weigh and out-shine her personality. This social evil in its present form is spreading unabated like a deadly epidemic with no sign on its control in sight. so far. Parents' attitude of discrimination between a male and a female child and financial disparity to a great extent, are responsible for this sad state of affair. | | I would like to add in this connection that there is no escape for anybody from this malady. It may not affect us directly, but there is every likelihood of its indirectly affecting us through the offsprings of our sons, daughters and cousins etc. | | We will have to change our entire outlook and perception about the sanctity of marriage and its values which means that the choice of a life-partner is, definitely more important than the material gain attached to it. It, of course does not mean the abolition of marriage gifts. It only means that a life partner is more important irrespective of the gifts, she brings along with her. A marriage not only unites a young man and a woman into a wedlock but also it brings together two families to share their `dukh-sukh' (pains and pleasure). In short a marriage is to be broad-based. | | THERE is no denying the established fact that giving dowry or marriage gifts to every girl, crossing the threshold of her parents at the time of her marriage, is a tradition prevalent since time immemorial. They are most happy to share with her whatever they could according to their capacity. But in the present day world the dowry has assumed such dangerous portents that a woman in general is being identified with the material commodities, she brings alongwith her. Its origin in one form or the other, dates back to the days of the institution ofarranged marriages in our society. |
