Everyone would wish to breathe one’s last and leave for one’s heavenly abode the way Smt. Yagia Devi Chhibber left for her final journey on 01.01.2008. She had spent a normal day, walked to the temple in the evening and was listening/watching Hanuman Chalisa on TV. She kept on sitting there (with closed eyes) when her children realised that she was no more. What a saintly way of departing-without a sigh, without pain and without any complaint!!!

She was married, in 1945 at Chakwal to the late Bhai Krishan Lal Chhibber (son of the late Bhai Devi Das ji Chhibber and the late Smt. Gurdai ji of Karyala). She was born to the late Dr. Pishori Lal Mehta (son of the late Risaldar Moolraj ji Mehta (Bhimwal) and the late Smt. Jamuna Devi of Kariyala) and the late Smt. Ram Ditti, on the day of the ‘Mundan Ceremony–Yagya (Havan)’ of her elder brother, the late Shri Thakur Dutt Mehta in June 1926. She was elder sister of Smt. Bimla Vaid (wife of Mehta K.L. Vaid) and myself.

Smt. Yagia was noble, humane, kind-hearted and God- fearing. She was always smiling, contented and ever willing to step forward with a helping hand.

She was so farsighted, mature and learned that she inculcated great qualities and values not only in her children but in me, also. She encouraged me to aspire high and I sincerely believe that I am what I am because of her affectionate nurture.

So deep was her love for each and every relationship that each relative felt that she loved him/her more than anyone else.

She has left behind a legacy of noble values for each one of us. If we can follow even a fraction of that, our lives would also become as simple as she made hers seem to be.

As a daughter, as a wife, as a mother, as a grandmother, as a sister and as a senior member of the family, she played each role to perfection. Such was the persona of my sister-the Yagia Chhibber. Her sudden departure has left a vacuum in our lives.

She is survived by two sons and three daughters. Her sons are Anil Chhibber–married to Smt. Rekha (their children are Raghav and Renuka) and Ashok Chhibber–married to Smt. Reema, (their children are Nalin and Divya). Her daughters are Smt. Kiran Bali–wife of the late Sh. Man Mohan Bali (their son is Arvind), Smt. Usha Dutta–married to Sh. Ashok Dutta (their children are Jai and Namarata) and Smt. Asha Dutta–married to Sh. Vijay Dutta (their daughter is Rachna).

On this occasion, the Chhibber family has donated Rs.1100/- to GMS Widow Fund and Rs.1100/- to GMS Education Fund. Her son Shri Ashok Kumar Chhibber has enrolled as Life Member of GMS.We all pray for peace to her soul–Brother Col. Satish Mehta.
