MOHYAL MITTER
TO GIVE, SANS EXPECTATION, IS BLISS DIVINE NATURE, (PRAKRITI), has endowed humanity with boundless energy and resources aplenty. It is upto us to nurture, harness and propagate the high morals of life and earn the Lord’s benign blessings. For, no one became the poorer by giving, by cultivating the healing attributes, by imbibing the spirit of fellow feelings, by purification of the divine soul, by love, empathy and compassion. Our fraternity has all the philanthropic attributes to heal lacerated hearts and to cement eternal bonds. Our Apex Body, GMS, has given us an opportunity and a window, to create new benchmarks, new challenges, to fulfil our ambitions, our dreams, to feel proud of our pristine heritage, our generosity and selfless devotion in the cause of our fraternity. We had successfully implemented the Mohyal Ashram and the Mohyal Sewa Sadan projects, Haridwar, by the benevolence of the large number of dedicated donors. Our charitable propensity is highly commendable and there is no doubt whatsoever that our fraternity members will similarly make donations for the prestigious Mohyal Ashram, Vrindavan. Our Vishwakarma President Rzd.B.D. Bali has invited the fraternity to be grand partners in the building of the Mohyal Ashram, Vrindavan. He desires that each member of the community donate according to his or her mite, even a brick. His is a call of the benign destiny, to fulfil the aspirations of our generations and generations to come. And God be with us all, and His grace, and bounty in abundance. – N.D. This year also saw the foundation stone laying ceremony of the newest project of the GMS, the Mohyal Ashram, Vrindavan, your brain child. This is also the year in which you had put forth the 9-point Action Plan for the Community. Yukti has the sporting skills and nuances in her genes, as her parents – both father and mother – had been national level sportspersons, in their own right, in the fields of Basket Ball and Net Ball. After the Darshan at the cave, we visited the tourist spot, Patnitop, and spent two days there. From there, we went to Jammu, as we had to board the train from Jammu.
We contacted Sh. N.L. Bakshi, President J&K Mohyal Sabha and expressed our desire to visit their Mohyal Bhawan at Jammu. Shri Bakshi immediately responded and told us how to reach the Mohyal Bhawan. We reached there around 3.30 p.m. The Mohyal Bhawan is a big building, with a Saraswati Mandir, 2 big halls on the ground floor, three rooms on the first floor, with a separate office at the ground floor. The main hall was being used as dormitory by “Amara Nath Yatris’’ and the other hall by the police. The Mohyal Bhawan is thus being used for a social cause as well as for the country’s needs. The Mohyal community is proud of this. We contacted Shri Bhim Sain Bali Secretary of the sabha on phone. We discussed about the proposed Dehradun Youth Camp in Oct. 2009 in detail. Soon, Shri N.L. Bakshi, President of the sabha, came and we went around the building and took some photographs. He served tea & snacks to us. He also told us as to how, with the help of local Mohyals and with Giriji Maharaj blessings, the Bhawan was built. After spending more than two hours, we left for Jammu Station. Bakshiji was kind enough to drop us at the Railway Station. My wife and I are thankful to the President and Secretary of the J&K Mohyal Sabha for making our visit memorable, by their warm and cordial welcome. —Sushil Kr. Datta, was working hard to help Mohyal students. He requested the members to encourage their children to participate in the Mohyal Quiz Contest, being published in Mohyal Mitter, every month. Winner of this contest will be given prize at the Mohyal Youth Camp 2009 at Dehradun by Rzd. B.D. Bali. Tambola: A game of tambola was played and enjoyed by all. The host donated Rs.250/- to the sabha. The meeting was adjourned with thanks to the host for the nice snacks and tea. O.P. Mohan, President SOUTH ZONE Visit to Mohyal Ashram Haridwar Date: 5th July, 2009 The meeting started with the usual prayers, followed by a welcome by the Secretary to the Mohyal brethren from MS Dehradun. The sabha was honoured by the presence of Sh. Lal Pravesh Mehta, Vice-President and Sh. Rajesh Mehta, Secy of MS Dehradun, who had accompanied Prof. J.S. Bali from Dehradun to attend the meeting. Members felt obliged and placed on record their gratitude for Prof. Bali’s untiring efforts to guide the sabha. They always looked forward to his wise counsel which acted as a catalyst to them.
Tributes were paid by the Secretary to the late Smt. Sarita Bali w/o Prof. J.S. Bali, who, despite her failing health, had taken the trouble of coming over from Dehradun to attend the sabha’s last meeting at Haridwar. Secretary then read out the minutes of the last meeting, which were confirmed. He also presented the accounts which too were passed. Secretary apprised the house of the need to conserve funds for the forthcoming first Budh Dev Datta Memorial Lecture, scheduled for the 6th Sept. 09. It was according by decided that, instead of subsidizing the trip to Mohyal Ashram by the sabha, it may be restricted to the charges for hiring the bus and that all other expenses would be equally shared by the members. The President, while thanking the brothers from Dehradun, also thanked all others who had come to Haridwar with their children, thus, adding colour/frolic to the trip and making it a grand success. He explained that the sabha owed its existence to the Mohyal stalwart Budh Devji & his wife Savitriji and that the sabha was not only their brainchild but also, the result of their joint foresight. His organizational power and skill in execution of projects were unmatched and unparalleled. He not only laid a strong foundation for the sabha, but also steered it ably through rough weather. The President then emphasised the contributions of Budh Devji to MES, GMS and other forums. A special mention was also made of his part in constructing the Mohyal Foundation, the “Mecca of Mohyals’’. As regards the B.D. Datta Memorial Lecture, the President opined that this would be a fitting tribute to the ‘Great Mohyal son’ and added that this would be the “First ever’’ Memorial Lecture in honour of a ‘True & Staunch Mohyal’. Prof. Vishwa Nath Datta, a renowned Mohyal and Historian of international repute, had been kind enough to agree to deliver the Maiden Memorial Lecture. It is a happy coincidence that Prof. V.N. Datta happens to be the co-brother of Budh Devji. Shri L.P. Mehta, Vice-President MS Dehradun informed that a Youth Mohyal Camp was being organized by GMS at Derhadun from 2nd to the 4th Oct. 09. This would include special programmes such as hiking, other cultural programmes. Arrangements were being made for boarding & lodging by the GMS in coordination with MS Dehradun. GMS would be subsiding the travel of outside delegates. The details would be published shortly by the GMS. He extended an invitation to the members of the South Zone Sabha for the function. Whilst thanking him for the invitation, the President assured that the sabha would send some delegates to the Camp. Prof. J.S. Bali stated that there ought to be no restriction for a Mohyal to become a member of any/multiple Mohyal Sabha, rather, all sabhas should welcome any Mohyal from anywhere to become their member. He advised that, Mohyals must deliberate on important social issues, like simple inexpensive marriages, protecting the rights of the girl child, educating poor children, economic help to needy families etc. He cited the example of the late Commander Gulbir Mehta, who nose-dived the aircraft he was piloting to save the lives of his passengers and the “jhuggi’’ dwellers on the ground knowing full well of his certian death. This selfless act of bravery has been published in the Mohyal Mitter of July 2009 in the article titled “Pilot Gulbir Mehta’s Saga of Sacrifice’’ by Prof. J.S. Bali. Prof. Bali donated Rs.500/-, in memory of his late wife, Smt. Sarita Bali. Sh. K.K. Dutt donated Rs.500, in memory of his late father Dr. Boota Ram Dutt of Kanjroor Daffarwallan and Rs.500/-, in memory of his late mother Smt. Pritam Devi Dutt. Gp. Capt. D.C. Mehta donated Rs.200/- on the marriage of his sister’s (Ms Sashi Bali w/o Sh. R.T.N. Bali of London) grandson, Dheeraj Chhibber (s/o Col. Sanjay and Sujata Chhibber & potha of Maj. Gen. D.N. Chhibber & the late Promilla Chhibber) with Ms. Amanda, on 20th Jun 09 at London. It was a great family reuion as many family members from India, Usa & Spain attended the function and blessed the young couple. Members also donated Rs. 1760 towards the “Haridwar Fund”. This was followed by a session of Bhajans by Ms. Praveen Datta (composed by herself) and an old Mukesh song by Ajai Datta. The meeting ended with an urdu poem by Bhai K.N. Chhibber and others, followed by a joint lunch at the Ashram which was enjoyed as Priti Bhoj. The meeting concluded after placing on record the sabha’s gratitude and appreciation to the Mohyal Ashram Management and the staff for their courteous and excellent services to make the stay of the members enjoyable and memorable. Special thanks to GMS for providing a marvel/gem of a venue for holding such community meets/congregations. The Haridwar trip, which was well planned & executed, included visits to the various temples at Haridwar, evening Aarti at Har-ki-pauri and a dip in the holy Ganga. Members also got an opportunity to visit Rishikesh, where they visited the many temples and the Ram Jhula. The trip was made enjoyable due to the excellent management/organizational skills, with an eye on the minutes details, of Sh. MM Mehta, Secretary and Mr. Ajay Datta. On behalf of all those who enjoyed the fruits of their efforts, the President thanked both of them. Man Mohan Mehta WEST ZONE Date: 31st May, 2009 Sad News: 1) Sh. Mamta Chhibbar at 596 BeechWood Dr, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada and attended by 20 members of the community. Sh. Gaurav Mohan General Secretary read out minutes of the last meeting, which were confirmed by the members. At the outset, President Sh. Jagdish Dutta thanked Sh. Subhash Chhibbar for hosting the meeting and for serving lunch. Draft of the Constitution was presented by General Secretary Sh. Gaurav Mohan to all the members so that it could be discussed and approved. He had already sent a copy of the same to all. Since the members had already read the draft, it was approved quickly by overwhelming majority. President thanked the Constitution Committee, led by Sh. Guru Dutt Vaid with the following members, for getting this major work done: 1. Sh. Sushim Mohan. The President also thanked Sh. Guru Dutt Vaid for making his house available for the Constitution Committee meetings and Sh. Gaurav Mohan for getting the draft typed and signed by the Constitution Committee members. After the Constitution was approved, it was necessary to have elections to formally elect the office-bearers. It was decided that Sabha will have Picnic Cum Elections some time in the month of August. Three dates 15, 22, 29 were chosen depending on the availability of the park. Two committees were constituted. First committee was constituted for organizing the picnic which included Sh. Yash Dutta and Smt. Vandana Mohan. Second for elections, which included Sh. Kapil Vaid, Sh. Narinder Dutta and Sh. Sushim Mohan. It was decided that schedule for the election must be presented by election committee by next meeting, the date for which will be decided depending on the date of the picnic. Vandana Mohan requested to have meeting at her house in July and she also invited everybody for the Lunch which she would like to provide in honor of Richa Mohan wife of Sh. Gaurav Mohan General Secretary of the Sabha who is coming to join him at the end of June. Good news: 1. Sunny Mohan S/O Sh. Sushim Mohan and Smt. Abha Mohan got admission in the university. The meeting concluded with thanks to Shri Subhash Chhibbar and Smt. Mamta Chhibbar for hosting the meeting and also for their hospitality. Note: The park for the picnic was not available in August so it was decided to organize it in July when park is available and the election date will be decided later on. Jagdish Dutta (President) GREETINGS FROM GMS Dear Gaurav, Last year, I was fortunate to participate in the picnic, which I enjoyed very much. This year, due to the short notice, neither I, nor any other representative from the GMS, will be able to join the picnic and be part of the celebrations. However, our thoughts will be with you on that day. Through this mail, I convey to you, and all the members of your sabha, on my own behalf, and on behalf of the President, and members of the Managing Committee of the GMS, our heartiest greetings and best wishes for the success of your picnic. I am sure that with you at the helm, the Mohyal Sabha Canada will progress from strength to strength in the years to come. As you are aware, the General Mohyal Sabha always encourages its affiliated local sabhas to organize such functions and, for this, sends an amount of Rs. 5,100/- as Shagun to the concerned sabha. Since you are situated abroad, sending such remittance from here involves lot of difficulties. As an easier solution, I would request you to pay an amount, in Canadian Dollars, equivalent to Rs. 5,100/-, to your sabha from your own funds, and the GMS shall reimburse this amount to you at an appropriate time. JAI MOHYAL! Mehta O.P. Mohan SEE WHAT OUR INDIA WAS LORD MACAULAY’S ADDRESS TO THE BRITISH PARLIAMENT /2 FEBRUARY, 1835 “I have travelled across the length and breadth of India and I have not seen one person, who is a beggar, who is a thief. Such wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such values, people of such caliber, that I do not think we would ever conquer this country, unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage, and, therefore, I propose that we replace her old and ancient education system, her culture, for, if the Indians think that all that is foreign and English, is good and greater than their own, they will lose their self-esteem, their native culture and they will become what we want them, a truly dominated nation’’. Dutt (Retd.) Mohyal youth is ideally suited for professions in the Armed Forces because it is in their genes. In old times, during times of wars, chieftains and governors were required to provide a stipulated number of soldiers to the reigning monarch. As there were no standing armies, soldiers had to be procured at short notice and preference was given to those belonging to martial races. Mohyals were well known for their fighting qualities, valor and loyalty. They readily took to arms and always came out of the battle with flying colours. Mohyal youth, therefore, has it in his blood to be a dedicated and capable soldier. Besides various historic battles, even in the post-Independence era, Mohyals have served with distinction in our Defence Services. Here is a great opportunity for our youth, both men and women, to join the Services. Career in the Armed Forces offers a secure, clean and decent life for its personnel. With recent increase in their pay package and several perks already enjoyed by them whether in service or after retirement, the profession has become very attractive. Furthermore, the Armed Forces provide a challenging and satisfying career to the youth at an early age besides opportunities to indulge in sports activities and adventurous pastimes. Advice to Mohyal Youth Now a few words about dispelling exaggerated fears about risk to life faced by a soldier. Unfortunately our country is surrounded by unfriendly neighbors and even during peacetime they are always covertly foaming insurgency along our borders. The terrorists trained by our enemies pose a threat to every citizen in the country. Lives of even innocent civilians are always under risk whether in peace or war. In modern times it is not even safe for a pedestrian to cross a busy road. Under these circumstances, risks faced by a soldier seem to be highly exaggerated. During peace time, Armed Forces prepare for war and their presence acts as a deterrent to our enemies thus providing a safe environment conducive to progress and prosperity of the country. Life of a soldier is very precious for the country and in modern warfare he is trained not to just die for his country but to make him (the enemy) die for his country. We look forward do larger number of Mohyal young men and women serving in this noble profession. In subsequent Articles, I shall indicate career opportunities in the officer cadres of different Services. Advertisements inviting young men to apply for recruitment and application formats are regularly published in the Employment News. There are three types of commonly used mental applications. Sense (Scientific), Non-Sense (Non-Science), Common Sense (available in abundance but used seldom). Scientific thinking means search for truth, being authentic and being realistic. Scientific thinking incorporates learning from failures, learning from mistakes, rather anyone who is continuously learning and evolving has a scientific approach. To have scientific temperament, you do not require a science degree (it may help but it is not a must). Scientific temperament requires ability to analyse, think logically, to be able to differentiate between right & wrong, to be able to do SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity & Threat) analysis. Scientific temperament depends on followings six servants. What, Why, When, Where, How & Who (The Quotation from Rudyard Kipling given below *) followings traits can help in cultivation of Scientific temperament, OBSERVATION, Curiosity, Inquisitiveness, Exploration, Perception. Thinking & Acting on that thinking (implementation), Learning while implementing leads to better thinking i.e. the result of scientific (inclusion / exclusion - rational / logical) thinking. Ironically, thinking is not encouraged and some people who have thinking ability never put it in use. Mind it, thinking is applied Science. All creativity, innovation and any incremental improvement & stretching one’s imagination are the results of scientific temperament. • I keep six honest serving men (They taught me all I knew); Their names are What and Why and When and How and Where and Who. The Sacred Waters The waters in the sky, the water of rivers, and water in wells whose source is the ocean, may all these sacred waters protect me. ‘Water flows from high in the mountains, Water runs deep in the earth. Miraculously, water comes to us, And sustains all life’. Even if we known the source of our water, we still take its appearance for granted. But it is thanks to water that life is possible, our bodies are more than 70 per cent water. Our food can be grown and raised because of water. Water is a god friend, bodhisattva, that nourishes the many thousands of species of Earth. Reciting this gatha before turning on the faucet or drinking a glass of water enables us to see the stream of fresh water in our own hearts so that we feel completely refreshed. To celebrate the gift of water is to cultivate awareness and help sustain our life and the lives of others. One should not dump human waste in ploughed fields, and with crops, dwelling places of cows, public paths, sacred places like rivers, water and banks of ponds. 38th Marriage Anniversary The 38th marriage anniversary of Smt. Transcendence is the power to be born anew, to make a fresh start, to turn over a new leaf, to begin with a clean slate, to enter into a state of grace, to have a second chance. Transcendence makes no reference to the past, whether your past has been over-flowing with victories or filled with defeats. When you enter a state of transcendence, you are able to create a new life..../Transcendence is more than just the accurate realisation that the past is over. It is also a realignment of all dimensions of yourself with the very source of your life. G.M.S. expresses its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prays to God to grant eternal peace to the departed souls and strength to their families to bear with fortitude their irreparable loss. — D.V. The late Shri Ved Prakash Mehta left this world suddenly on the morning of 27 June 2009, leaving all his dear and near stunned. We could not even call the doctor. Even in death, he showed the calm and serene nature of his character. Born on 30 June 1938 in Pind Dattan Khan, District Jhelum (now in Pak.), he was the only son of the late Shri Som Dev Mehta (Lau) and the late Smt. Shanti Devi Mehta. He was brought up with very high values of life. He led a very simple and straightforward life. Being of a jovial nature, he always used to be the central figure in the company of friends. He was loved by every body, indeed a great friend of friends. In the last two years of his life, he faced the death of his younger and the youngest sons, very calmly. The large gathering of friends and relatives, who assembled on Uthala on 30th June ‘09 to pay Shradhanjali to the departed soul, clearly signified how large a soul he was. This healthy, ripe old age was not an accident. A strict disciplinarian in her own daily routine. Absolute cleanliness in food. For many years she would insist on cooking her own food even when servants were there. An Arya Samajist of rare type. Her father Pardumman Singh Bali, took vaanprast at age 30, built the village Gharota Arya Samaj in a corner of his own house, made shudh the lower castes of that village and made them draw water from the same well as caste Hindus. He even kept one of them to serve in the kitchen–a rare reformist gesture those days. Many a Christian converts were brought and made shudh and converted back to Hinduism. Such was the family background in which Savitri’s childhood was spent, before she was married in 1928. Savitri’s mother Gian Devi who lived up to 100 opened a school in her own house and took a vow that no girl from the village would go away in marriage, illiterate. For decades before independence, this was the only schooling available for girls of this rural region of Pathankot Tehsil in district Gurdaspur of Punjab. Her in-laws–Datts of Sialkot–were equally great. Savitri’s brother-in-law, Chaudhury Krishan Gopal Datt, was a Minister in the 1935 cabinet of Sir Sikander Hayat Khan, the Prime Minister of Punjab under the 1935 Govt of India Act. Her husband, Dharampal Datt was one of the first among Mohyals to take to business successfully. Savitri ji leaves behind her sons Raji and Vijay, and daughter Bimla Bakshi. Rajii and his wife Madhu–niece of General Z.C. Bakshi– served her for many many years. Madhu unfortunately died at a comparatively young age. Their household would often see assembly of five generations on the Rakhi and other festival days. Steeped in ancient culture and modern outlook, Savitri Dutt was a social leader, both by action and example. Savitriji will remain unforgettable. —Prof J. S. As in every year, the family got together for havan for the peace of my grand mother’s soul, at A-201 Defence Colony, New Delhi, followed by Brahman Bhoj, lunch for the underprivileged at Delhi Cheshire Home- almost a tradition, for the last 11 years. A few new members in the family were part of this annual pilgrimage. Members across three to four generations were present to pay their homage to the noble departed soul. On this day, my maternal grandfather, Rzd. R.D.S. Bali, donated Rs.1000/- to GMS towards the Widow Fund Trust that he has established in the memory of his beloved wife.—Gaurav Chhibber, Grandson.
