MOHYAL MITTER

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

My colleague, Bk. N.D. Datta, Executive Editor, MM, has taken a well-deserved two months’ break from editorial responsibilities and this has given me an opportunity to address you directly through these columns- a welcome change, as change is an essence of life.

As you are aware, our President, Mohyal Ratna Rzd. B.D. Bali and Smt. Nita Bali celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on the 1st March, 2009. Through the columns of Mohyal Mitter, I once again wish the couple many more years of happy married life in the service of the community. GMS Secretary, Shri J.P. Mehta & Smt. Neelam Mehta, GMS MC Members, Dr. Rattan Datta & Smt. Meena Datta, and Shri G.L. Mehta & Smt. Veena Mehta also celebrated their Wedding Anniversaries in March 2009. I extend my best wishes to them also for a long and happy life.

NEW YEAR GIFT
I would also like to congratulate all of you and thank Mohyal Ratna Rzd. B.D. Bali, for the New Year gift given to all of us, in the form of the upcoming Mohyal Ashram at Vrindavan. Many of you would have participated in the functions held at Vrindavan for the Bhoomi Pujan and Foundation Stone laying ceremony for the Ashram on the 14th February 2009. It was truly a wonderful experience to see so many happy faces – children, youth, elders, ladies alike – who thronged the venue and were eager to mark their presence on the specially erected ‘Signature Sheet’ at the entrance to the Pandal. During and after the ceremony, the Mohyals were vying with each other to make donations to and be a part of the new Ashram at Vrindavan. Donations came in torrents and are continuing, even now, non-stop.

MIDAS TOUCH
At this juncture, I would like to remind you, my brethren, that things were not so rosy for the GMS till about three decades back. Those were really the bad old days. Your Apex body had no permanent place to stay and functioned from a ramshackle shed. Rzd. B.D. Bali gave a Midas touch to the GMS immediately he took over as President and the things started to get going. First it was the Mohyal Bhawan at Inderpuri. Then, slowly, but surely, more assets and more buildings like Mohyal Foundation and Mohyal Ashram Haridwar began coming up.

AID TO WIDOWS/STUDENTS
Apart from the immoveable assets, the GMS has been building up its emotional links also with the members of the community directly as well as through the local sabhas, without whose co-operation, we could not have achieved so much. One of our main charitable activities is the financial aid that the GMS extends to the needy widows of our community as well as students belonging to economically weaker sections. The GMS has also been encouraging brilliant students with scholarships etc.

MATCH-MAKING SEWA
Another area where GMS has been making efforts to help the members of the community is in the matter of helping them to find suitable match for their sons/daughters. Besides the matrimonial ads in the Mohyal Mitter, we have been holding quarterly Shaadi Durbars at the Mohyal Bhawan Inderpuri and also organizing annual Matrimonial Melas. Lists of eligible boys and girls are prepared and circulated to all interested persons, as also to the local sabhas. This has helped many families to get back into the fold of the Community. In the field of education also, GMS has set up the Mohyal Educational and Research Institute of Technology to impart computer education. I would like to elaborate more about MERIT in the next issue.

LIMCA BOOK OF RECORDS
Our darling “Mohyal Mitter” has been classified as India’s oldest continuously published magazine by the Limca Book of Records. The credit for this honour goes to our Secretary General Shri D.V. Mohan for his efforts.
In our journey towards progress and development, we want to take along all Mohyals – big and small – to a still brighter, richer and better future, to ensure that Mohyals, as a class, remain united, stronger, richer and reach the pinnacles of glory.

JAI MOHYAL! JAI HIND!

A BRIEF HISTORY
MOHYAL SABHA – HYDERABAD & SECUNDERABAD

It was the beginning of 1977 when the late Lt. Yadonath Dutt (Retd.) and the undersigned met and discussed about our community and thought of forming a Mohyal Sabha. Both discussed the matter again with the late Shanti Nandan Bakshiji who agreed with the suggestion straight away. The known Mohyals of the twin-cities were contacted subsequently and a meeting was arranged at the residence of Shri Shanti Nandan Bakshi on Sunday the 13th Feb. 1977. There were a total of 11 Mohyals who responded to the first call and each donated Rs.5/- on the spot to mark the launching of Mohyal Sabha–Hyderabad & Secunderabad. The 11 Mohyals were:

1. Shri Shanti Nandan Bakshi (Deceased)-Founder President
2. Col. Revati Raman Bakshi (Deceased)-Retd. from Pakistan Army
3. Lt. Yadonath Dutt (Deceased)- Founder Vice-President
4. Shri Baldev Kumar Bali
5. Shri O.P. Bali (shifted out)
6. Shri Jagdish Sahay Dutt
7. Wg. Cdr. S.L. Bali (shifted out)
8. Flt. Lt. VK Bali (posted out)
9. Shri Yashbir Dutt
10. Bk. Raj Kumar Dutt (discontinued later on)
11. Shri Vishwa Mitter Mohan-Founder Secretary.

The meeting unanimously elected Shri Shanti Nandan Bakshi, Shri Yadonath Dutt and Shri Vishwa Mitter Mohan as the President, Vice-President and Secretary, respectively. After this humble start, we went to the houses of many other Mohyal brothers some of whom joined the sabha. The next meeting, in March 1977, saw the induction of Sh. Brahmanand Mehta (deceased), Sh. Sachidanand Mehta, Sq. Ldr. D.K. Bali (posted out) and his father Shri Ramlok Bali in the sabha. In Aug. 1977, Sub. Balraj Vaid (now in Chandigarh), Dr. Hans Raj Dutta (deceased), Shri Ajit Dutta and Shri Subhash Mehta also joined us.

Since then, the monthly meetings were held regularly at the residences of members. After the construction of our Bhavan, the meetings are being conducted there every month. Every year, in the month of January, we hold a Mela which is a whole-day affair.

The sabha and its members have been contributing generously to the General Mohyal Sabha and the Mohyal Education Society. Members who attain the age of 75, are considered Prathisthat Members and are not charged any membership fees.

Silver Jubilee: On the 12th & 13th (Lohri Day) Jan. 2002, we celebrated our Silver Jubilee in a befitting style, especially the 13th Jan. evening from 7.30 p.m. till midnight at RSI Club (Army). All out-station guests and dignitaries stayed on for the second day. Those days there were many Mohyal Army Officers serving here. They and their families extended their whole-hearted cooperation to the function. The evening was very lively-full of Punjabi live songs, Punjabi Dhol, Bhangra dances and Lohri fire.

Earlier, on the 12th January, a Havan was performed before the meeting. At the meeting, first, the National Flag, and, then, the Mohyal Flag were presented on the dais in a grand style. Departed souls were remembered in a befitting manner. Various games were conducted for ladies and children.

Mohyal Bhawan: It was again 11 members who came to see the site and gave their final approval for the Mohyal Bhavan. A Trust was formed and registered. Twice, appeals were sent to Mohyals all over, followed by telephone calls. GMS was the biggest contributor. Many other Mohyals also kindly contributed. Today the value of the property is about Rs. 25 lakhs.

The Bhavan has a hall, a big fully furnished bedroom with an attached bathroom (equipped with a geyser) and a new 21” colour TV. The kitchen is also sufficiently big and adequately stocked with some utensils etc., besides having a new refrigerator, gas stove and gas cylinder.

The Bhavan was inaugurated by Mohyal Ratna Rzd. B.D. Bali, GMS President, on the 20th Sept., 2004 accompanied by Bk. N.D. Datta of Mohyal Mitter. It was attended by several dignitaries from other states also.

We invite persons to utilize the Bhavan. Charges for Mohyals will be very moderate. These will be published shortly.

A CAREER ON THE HIGH SEAS

By ADITYA MOHAN
While at sea it is nothing like being on land, away from all the lights, sounds and sights, the horizon surrounds you and during sunrise and sunset it is like a canvas with changing colours, the night sky looks like a glittering carpet laid in the heavens. All in all this profession favours people who want to see the world, different cultures, and working at the same time plus the best part as I believe is that one doesn't have to take that long drive to work, also the fact that when u are home during your off period there is no work to be done so the same time can be dedicated to your personal life, tasks etc. After my interaction with a lot of people, I have come to realise that people still relate the merchant navy to the TITANIC Era. What we have to realise is that the merchant ships today are one of the most advanced marvels of technology.

Shipping has been progressing just like any other profession in the world learning from other’s mistakes and incorporating changes to make it a safer job. As things and regulations stand today, it is much more dangerous to travel by road compared to being on board a merchant ship.

But let me warn you people thinking of joining this as a profession, thinking it’s easy money. That is however not the case. Studies and examinations are something that will always piggyback almost throughout your career as you move up the ladder and even after one becomes a Captain/Chief Engineer.

Sailing periods have come down by huge margins as companies have become more flexible. They are usually never more than 6 months continuously and also might be 4 on board/2 off or at higher ranks 2.5 on board/2.5 (months)off.

Communication gaps today are a thing of the past. Today all vessels have their company-based email system for basic correspondence on daily basis for crew and company. Satellite phone is another marvel that is found in every ship, so irrespective of where the ship is in the world, everyone is just a phone call away.

The work on board is basically divided into
1. Deck Department- Required BSc Nautical Sciences to start; basic jobs on deck include Administration, Navigation, Maintenance of Safety Equipment, Ship Stability & Management.
2. Engine Department- Required BE Marine Engineering. Job includes Engine Room Watch Keeping and Maintenance and Trouble Shooting of Machinery.
3. Duals-officers- Licensed to do both Deck and Engine duties. Only a very few companies have these schemes running.

To be out at sea everyday is a new start and the officers and crew face new and exciting challenges on board but I would also mention that it is a profession not suited to everybody here. Practicality tops over theoretical knowledge and experience is what counts. Often symptoms of home-sickness and sea-sickness are noted among beginners but over a period of time almost all of them get used to the routine of staying away from land and seeing just the other vessel personnel for a period.

The investment that is to be made in this profession is almost the same and might be even less if compared to some of the other degrees and colleges. For the Deck Department the cost of a Bsc (Nautical)(3 yrs.) is about 6 to 9 lakhs. And Engine Department about 9 to 12 lakhs for a BE Marine Engineering (4 years) (including boarding, books, uniform and meals). New Delhi, and GMS may be approached with a request to make it available. Prof. J.S. Bali suggested that the Speaker on this occasion should be an eminent Mohyal and proposed the name of Prof. V.N. Datta, famous historian. Accordingly it was decided to contact Prof. Datta, in person, so as to ensure his availability and acceptance, before other details were worked out.

Papers written by Prof. J.S. Bali on Social Reforms & Caste or Curse: The two papers having been tabled for consideration of the house, the author initiated the discussions by spelling out the rationale behind the school of thought. Based on detailed deliberations, the geneal consensus was as follows:-

(a) There is need to carry out Social Reforms especially with regard to the son-syndrome, which unfortunately is prevalent across the society at large. Forums/Plaforms such as Sabhas/Societies/Association/Neighbourhood groups should not only be gainfully utilized to stem this practice but they should also be advised to be vigilant to ensure that those practising such uncivilized acts are publicly identified and exposed. This would entail extensively educating the masses for which the media (both print & visual) could be utilized.

(b) Looking at the issue pragmaticlly, from a micro level, the sabhas too ought to be continued. Family unit, being the very nucleus of the fiber of the society, acts as a catalyst in bringing about change for the betterment of mankind at large and their membes in particular. Therefore, when two or more families join hands and convert themselves into Joint family/Sabha/Association, it would not only ensure the progress/prosperity of the group but also contribute towards the betterment of mankind at large. When such groups interact with other like-minded groups, it would go a long way for achieving the goals/aims at the national level.

(c) As regards local sabhas creating and developing their assets, be it moveable or immoveable, there should be no restraints put, provided all actions are in conformity with the guidelines in the MOU, maintaining total transparency.

(d) With the changing times, there is need to change the old perspective towards the Dalits/Shudras, keeping in view the safeguards provided for them in the Constitution of the country and the measures that have been adopted by the governments. Due cognizance and recognition should be accorded to these groups. They must be extended due courtesies whilst interacting with them as a group as is being done in other cases.

(e) The sabhas could identify and approach needy members so as to extend a helping hand.

Before the meeting came to an end, the President thanked Prof. J.S. Bali for raising very thought-provoking issues and thanked all members for their active participation in the discussions, which made the meeting not only interesting but meaningful too.

The Secretary proposed a vote of thanks to the hosts for the lovely arrangements made for the meeting. All thanked the hosts for the great lunch.

Memorable Trip to Haridwar
Our trip to Haridwar was a truly gratifying experience. The essence of worship and belief, combined with the exceptionally breath-taking scenery opened us up to a new and unique feeling.

While in Haridwar, we stayed the night at the Mohyal Ashram, and although arriving quite late at night, with a group of over 25 people, we were openly welcomed by a co-operative, friendly and hand-working staff. We were immediately served dinner of fresh Indian-vegetarian cuisine and all our needs were attended to, providing us with a comfortable stay.

If ever planning another trip to Haridwar, the Mohyal Ashram would definitely be our first choice of stay. This trip was one of the most memorable visits we had while in India.

ANTIM YATRA

LEARN TO ACCEPT THE CYCLE OF BIRTH & DEATH

Since there is no escape, it would be wise to accept the cycle of birth and death in a spirit of equimindedness. Birth will, then, be no occasion for joy, nor will death be an occasion for sorrow.

G.M.S. expresses its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prays to God to grant eternal peace to the departed souls and strength to their families to bear with fortitude their irreparable loss.

— D.V. Mohan, Secretary General

Smt. Sumitra Rani Chhibber (1926-2008)
Smt. Sumitra Rani Chhibber d/o the late Mehta Kripa Ram Lau of Pind-Dadan Khan, Distt. Jhelum (Pakistan) expired in July 2008. She left behind two daughters and two sons, all well settled. She was the wife of Shri T.S. Chhibber Ex-Editor & Founder Member of South Zone Mohyal Sabha.

Shri Surjit Singh Bali (70)
On the 26th of Feb. 2009, a shocking news came from USA that Surjit Singh Bali- our dear Surjit- is no more. This was the second sad news within a month for the Gharota Bali family who produced the bright star of Hukam Singh Bali, the Chief Conservator of Forests of J&K in early 20th Century, and who presided over the 1929 Mohyal Conference held at Sialkot (now in Pak.). On the 3rd Feb. 2009, his sister Savita Bali Mehta had passed away. Two stars of the family had set within a month.

Surjit spent his childhood in the well-known Karmo-deodi of Amritsar. One of his senior play-mates of his childhood days was none other than the ever active Dharam Vir Mohan, Secretary General of the GMS, who has brought up the standards of administration to the modern corporate level. The childhood days were not easy and wrought life-long hardy qualities in Surjit.

He left for Hong Kong after a few years’ work at Bombay. Surjit soon shone as a bright star in the business circles of this famous British colony. He became the Vice-Chairman of the Hong Kong Indian Chamber of Commerce. Before Hong Kong was taken over by the Chinese government, Surjit moved his establishment to USA.

In USA, he built up from scratch a flourishing export business with his supply lines extending to the continents of Europe, Asia and Africa. Such a phenomenal success in the field of commerce was rare among the Mohyals. Surjit became the beacon light on the new paths of progress. He tried to induct his brothers and other Mohyals also into business, with varying levels of success. But his own business standards were ever models of efficiency and integrity.

Surjit leaves behind his wife, Geeta Vaid Bali, who works for the US Postal Department. He trained his only son, Girish, into the intricacies of the business world. He also leaves behind his daughter, Bhavana, who is an intellectual and works for the US corporate world.

Surjit had no plans to continue forever in USA. He purchased a decent flat in Gurgaon and was preparing for his retirement there. But fate willed otherwise.

His immediate family, the family of Gharota Balis and the many Mohyal families with whom he was connected, mourn for him. The whole Mohyal Community- our larger extended family– mourns for Surjit. He shall remain unforgettable.—J.S. Bali.

Smt. Kaushalya Devi was born in New Delhi on the 8th Feb. 1921 to Bakshi Dwarka Nath Chhibber and Smt. Daropti Devi. On her mother’s side, she was the great grand daughter of the Founder President of GMS Bakshi Jog Dhian Bali and, on the father’s side, the grand daughter of Rai Bahadur Bakshi Harbans Lal Chhibber, the second President of GMS.

Her father died in 1941 at the young age of 43 and, a year later, she was married to Bakshi Mela Ram Vaid, School Headmaster in Mirpur, (J&K). Her father-in-law, Bakshi Ram Chand Vaid was Zaildar and mother-in-law Smt. Budh Wanti, a housewife.

Within 5 years of her marriage, the country was partitioned in 1947, and, during the holocaust, her husband and mother-in-law fell victims at the hands of the marauders. She escaped to India with her father-in-law and 3 infant daughters. Here again, misfortune struck her, when her father-in-law was washed away in flash floods in J&K and the family took shelter with her mother and her family in Karol Bagh, New Delhi.

To augment the family income, she initially took up the job as a school teacher in Lahore Montessori School, Karol Bagh at a meagre salary of Rs.50/- only. Later she got regular appointment as a Lower Division Clerk, under Delhi Administration from where she retired as Upper Division Clerk in I.T.I. Subzi Mandi on 28.2.1979.

She was God-fearing, and was a dedicated and loving mother. During her service, she got her daughters educated and married to highly qualified and supporting sons-in-law. Her eldest daughter, Indu is married to Mr. O.P. Datta, Financial Consultant, settled in England, with son Amit Datta, an employee under B.O.A.C. The third daughter Neena is married to Mr. Ashok Sharma, an Engineer in NASA in the USA and son Nikhil who is a Doctor.

Ever since her migration to Delhi, she remained with her maternal family till her last. She witnessed and participated in the marriages of her brothers, Subhash Chander with Suman Dutta, and Satish Chander with Veena Datta, sisters, Nirmal with Dr. G.N. Bakshi and, Usha with Dr. Rajni Kant Dutta.

Her mother died in 1984. With her married sisters away, she led an independent and comfortable life in the company of her two brothers, who looked after her in every hour of need. Age started telling on her health and she became a chronic patient of high blood pressure, diabetes and cardiac complications for treatment of which she had to be repeatedly hospitalised. The last admission on Jan. 28, 2009 was in the Jessa Ram Hospital where she breathed her last on the 7th Feb. 09 exactly on the day of completing 88 years of age.

Kaushalyaji willed donations of Rs.5000/- each to the GMS Widow Fund and Child Welfare Fund. Being a thorough religious-minded lady, she willed other donations of Rs. 2100/- each to both the Arya Samaj and Sanathan Dharam Mandirs. May her soul rest in peace.

SHRI VAID PRAKASH BAKSHI (CHHIBBER) (1916-1994), was one of those rare souls, who pass this way only occasionally. He did not marry. He devoted his whole life to the service of others – a life of altruism. Every phase of his 78 years in this world was full of stories of his help to the needy, service to the sick and devotion to his widowed mother and two younger sisters.

Born to Shri Dina Nath Bakshi of Jammu and Srinagar and Smt. Ram Rakhi Bakshi (daughter of Rai Bahadur Dina Nath Mohan of Pind Dadan Khan) and third of the family of five brothers and two sisters, Vaid Prakash–popularly known as Chann–showed his traits of self-less service at an early stage. When refused leave by the Traders’ Bank, Srinagar, for his sister’s marriage, he resigned. He moved to Delhi and served the Standard Chartered Bank for a score and more years.

One day, he came back from the office with a poor patient of TB, a truly dreaded disease then. Another time, he lingered at some one else’s road side accident to help the victims and get into trouble with the police. He was supporting half a dozen poor widows with regular remittances. His tan, man and dhan were at the service of his mother, who spent her 39 years of widowhood at his house, and two sisters, whom he served like a father.

His last years were those of a true sanyasi at an Ashram at Haridwar on the banks of the holy Ganga. Once I observed him going through all the rituals of his own Kriya-Karam, with liberal charity to the poor. He was a devotee of Ram, and an active member of the intinerant Ram Katha Group, which he supported with his own resources. Befitting by his end came at the Ganga bank where he got a cremation in the tradition of the devoted souls.
In the sacred memory of this self-less soul, his niece– Mrs. Lavi Sinha (Vaid)– has donated Rs. 25000/- to GMS as part payment for a room at the Mohyal Ashram Vrindavan.

From a Family Sharing our Journey

Whenever I browse extended family trees, I find it rather interesting to see how linkages of marriage keep showing up over generations between the same set of Mohyal clans that resided in the area that my own forefathers belonged to- that is, the tract between the Salt Range and the River Jhelum in Pind Dadan Khan Tehsil of Distt. Jhelum.

One such extended family, that is linked via marriages in multiple generations with my own, is that of the late Shri Mehta Sant Ram Vaid, who, of course, originally hailed from Tehsil Pind Dadan Khan as well.

Today, the District of Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh is teeming with many Mohyal families, but the pioneer who started it all, was Shri Sant Ram Vaid. His family’s decision to relocate there was not a pre-planned migration, but, instead, a result of unexpected hardships imposed suddenly by an act of fate.

Destiny plays a part in the lives of all of us, but the way it brought challenges and changed the course of this particular family was with rather deep imprints. Early in his career, Shri Sant Ram Vaid worked in the collieries in the Sor Range of hills near Quetta in Baluchistan. His family had barely settled in there, when a severe earthquake rattled Quetta, in May 1935, causing unprecedented destruction and forcing their decision to move and re-establish life in a new location.

The relatives, who stayed on in Pind Dadan Khan, too suffered especially hard in the subsequent decade, during the partition- a fate not very different from Mohyals in other areas of West Punjab though. Raja Ghaznafar Ali Khan’s attempt to retain Hindus in the area in order to boost the perception of Pakistan as a tolerant state proved to be short-lived, and only ended up setting up the scene for especially brutal massacres of many Mohyals afterwards, notably in the train ambush of Kamoke, in September 1947.

All these setbacks were taken in stride, and, over the years, many more of this extended family rose to make a name in the Coal Mine industry. However, one person opted to chart a different path-instead choosing the career more traditionally associated with Mohyals, that is, in the Armed Forces. He was Shri Sant Ram Vaid’s youngest son, Shri Raj Kumar Mehta-affectionately addressed as Raj Uncle by my father’s generation. Consistent with the high standards traditionally set by Mohyals in uniform, he excelled in his work as a fighter pilot in the Air Force. Those, who were his colleagues, still talk of his skills, and remember him as “ace material”- the highest compliment a fighter pilot can get from his peers.

The hand of destiny in this family’s history was to surface once again in a cruel way in a surreal sequence of events. On 8th November 1960, the then Chief of the Indian Air Force, Air Marshal Subroto Mukherjee died in tragic circumstances in Tokyo, after a piece of food accidentally got stuck in his windpipe, choking him to death. When the plane carrying his body back to India was in the country’s air space, Flt. Lt. Raj Kumar Mehta’s Gnat was one of the jets assigned to escort that aircraft as a mark of respect. Soon after Air Marshal Mukherjee’s plane had landed, Flt. Lt. Raj Kumar Mehta’s Gnat too had already begun its own landing approach to Palam airport, when the pilot of another Gnat, performing the same escort duty, reported mechanical trouble and requested that he be allowed to land first. Flt. Lt. Mehta agreed and pulled out of his approach, allowing the other pilot to touch down first- which he did, safely. In the utmost irony, when Flt. Lt. Mehta’s plane was circling overhead in wait for the next landing opportunity, it suffered a bird hit.

Being the skilled and determined pilot that he was, he tried his best to save the aircraft, rejecting the option of abandoning his jet when bailing out could have saved his life. Eventually, when he did eject, it was at too low an altitude for his parachute to deploy. Thus, on 9th November 1960, a very promising Air Force Officer’s life came to a tragic and premature end. His brief, but outstanding, career culminated in the Award of the Ashok Chakra-II, now referred to as the Kirti Chakra.

Like many other Mohyals before him, and many since, Flt. Lt. Raj Kumar Mehta died in uniform, in choosing to give priority to the nation’s needs over his own. He left this world a decade before I arrived in it. Still, his is a story that l wanted to share- because people like him deserve to be never forgotten.
