MOHYAL ASHRAM VRINDAVAN A BENIGN BLESSING
OF THE LORD

—narendra d datta

Our Apex Body, the GMS, is the repository of the Mohyali spirit and ethos, the conscious reservoir of the fraternity in all its manifestations. Our good and noble deeds are our real and precious investments and the main factor propelling us to embark on new ventures.

The announcement by our President to build a Mohyal Ashram at the holy city of Vrindavan has been unanimously acclaimed by the fraternity, as the crowning glory of our dynamic and visionary leader, Mohyal Ratna Rzd. Baldev Datt Bali. By this one act, a formidable challenge has been thrown before the community, to come forward and shoulder responsibility in a more active and meaningful manner. There is no lack of ingenuity and innovative skill amongst our people, especially our upcoming generation, our future leaders, and no dearth of donors for good causes, as evident at the Mohyal Ashram Haridwar, Mohyal Sewa Sadan and the spate of Langar donors. This spirit of generosity, God willing, will be emulated for the Mohyal Ashram Vrindavan in ample measure. More than 15 donors for rooms have already come forward and a start for Langar Fund donors too has been announced.

The good news is that Bhoomi Pujan and Foundation Stone laying ceremony will take place on 14th February, 2009, the auspicious time: 11.00 A.M -12.00 Noon.

GMS President Rzd. B. D. Bali, the architect of this mega project will ceremoniously lay the foundation stone amidst recitation of Vedic mantras and havan, signalling the construction work in right earnest.

The parameters of GMS success in any venture it has embarked upon is the bland fact of the faith and trust the fraternity reposes in its transparency and impeccable integrity, an enviable, unmatchable record, be it MERIT or the future upcoming old-age home at Dehradun et al! A new chapter, in letters of gold, is being scripted in our pristine history. In this decade, GMS achievements have soared sky high. This is a profound moment, an historic moment, and we thank the Lord God for bestowing upon us the wisdom and grace to build a magnificent Ashram at Vrindavan, the abode of Lord Krishna. We seek the blessings of our founding fathers and express our gratitude to them for their vision and farsightedness. We of the present generation have been ordained by the mystic hand of destiny to build bridges of deep understanding, love, compassion and empathy. We have a long, long way to go in pursuit of our objective to usher in a society, where all are equal partners endeavouring for our welfare, well being and happiness.

The sanctity and importance of Vrindavan has been highlighted hereinunder:

Vrindavan, or Braj, in Mathura district, Uttar Pradesh, is a town on the site of an ancient forest which is believed to have been the region where the famous cowherd boy, Krishna, from Hindu scriptures, spent his childhood days. It lies in the Braj region.
It is about 15km away from Mathura city, Krishna’s birthplace, near the Agra-Delhi highway. The town includes many hundreds of temples dedicated to the worship of Radha and Krishna and is considered sacred by a number of religious traditions such as Gaudiya Vaishnavism, Vaishnavism, and Hinduism in general.

While, in the past, Vrindavan was considered the most beautiful of forests in the whole of India (Kalidas), in the last 250 years it has been subjected to urbanization first by local Rajas and, in recent decades, by more and more apartment developers. At present, the number of trees in the area are meagre and the local wildlife, including peacocks, monkeys and a variety of bird species have mostly been eliminated or are in severe danger of elimination. A few peacocks and monkey are, however, freely found.

Etymology: The ancient name of the city, ‘Brindaban’ is after its ancient groves of ‘Brinda’ Ocimum tenuiflorum or Tulsi with ban meaning a grove or a forest.. Two small groves still exist, Nidhivan and Seva Kunj

History: Vrindavan has always remained a part of the Hindu folklore, and an important Hindu pigrimage centre. One of its oldest surviving temples is the Govinda Deo temple built in1590. The modern town is said to have been founded earlier, in the same century.

Religious Heritage: Vrindavan is a holy place by all traditions of Hinduism. The major tradition followed in this place is Vaisnavism. It is a centre of learning with many Ashrams functioning from Vrindavan. It is a centre of Krishna worship and the area, including places like Govardhana and Gokula, is associated with Krishna from times immemorial. Many millions of bhaktas or devotees of Radha Krishna visit these places of pilgrimage every year and participate in a number of festivals that relate to the scenes from Krishna’s life on Earth.

KRISHNA’S BIRTH PLACE: According to tradition and recorded evidence, Krishna was raised in the cowherding village of Gokul by his foster parents Nanda Maharaj and Yasoda. The Bhagavata Purana describes Krishna’s early childhood pastimes in Vrindavan forest wherein he, his brother Balaram, and his cowherd friends stole butter, engaged in childhood pranks and fought with demons. Along with these activities, Krishna is also described as meeting and dancing with the local girls of Vrindavan village (and especially Radharani) who were known as gopis. These pastimes were the source of inspiration for the famous Sanskrit poem, Gita Govinda, by the Odissi poet, Jayadeva (c. 1200 AD).

Temples: The most popular temples include:

The Madan Mohan Temple located near the Kali Ghat built by Kapur Ram Das of Multan. This is the oldest existing temple in Vrindavan today. The temple is closely associated with the saint Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. The original image of Lord Madan Gopal was shifted from the shrine to Karauli in Rajasthan for safe keeping during Aurangzeb’s rule. Today, a replica of the image is worshiped at the temple.
The Banke Bihari Temple, built in 1862 is the most popular shrine at Vrindavan. The image of Banke-Bihari was discovered in Nidhi Vana by Swami Haridas, a great Krishna devotee, belonging to the Nimbarka Sampradaya.
The famous Radha Vallabh Temple set up by the Radha-Vallabh Sampradaya, through Sri Hith Harivansh Mahaprabhu has the crown of Radharani placed next to the Shri Krishna image in the sanctum.
The Jaipur Temple was built by Sawai Madho Singh II, the Maharaja of Jaipur in 1917, is a richly embellished and opulent temple. The fine hand - carved sandstone is of unparalleled workmanship. The temple is dedicated to Shri Radha Madhava.
Sri Radha Raman Mandir constructed at the request of Gopala Bhatta Goswami around 1542 is one of the most exquisitely crafted and revered temples of Vrindavan, especially by the Goswamis. It still houses the original saligram deity of Krishna, alongside Radharani.
The Shahji Temple, another popular temple at Vrindavan, was designed and built in 1876 by a wealthy jeweller, Shah Kundan Lal of Lucknow. The deities at the temple are popularly known as the Chhote Radha Raman. Noted for its magnificent architecture and beautiful marble sculpture, the temple has twelve spiral columns each 15 feet high. The ‘Basanti Kamra’ - the darbar hall is famed for its Belgian glass chandeliers and fine paintings.
The Govind Deo (Govindaji) Temple was once a magnificent seven-storeyed structure built in the form of a Greek cross. It is said that the Emperor Akbar donated some of the red sandstone that had been brought for the Red Fort at Agra, for the construction of this temple. Built at the astronomical cost of one crore rupees in 1590 by his general Raja Man Singh, the temple combines western, Hindu and Muslim architectural elements in its structure. It was destroyed by Mughal ruler Aurangzeb.
The Sri Krishna-Balrama Temple built by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in a location known as ‘Raman-Reti’, is one of the most beautiful temples in Vrindavan today. The principal deities of this temple are Krishna & Balaram, with Radha-Shyamasundar and Gaura-Nitai alongside.
The Radha Damodar Mandir located at Seva Kunj, was established in 1542 by Srila Jiva Goswami. The deities Sri Sri Radha Damodar are here. The Bhajan Kutir of A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada is also situated at the Mandir.

Other sacred sites: Kusuma Sarovar bathing ghat, in the Vrindavan area were Akbar and Tansen visited Swami Haridas.

Other places of interest include Seva Kunj, Kesi Ghat, Sriji Temple, Jugal Kishore Temple, Lal Babu Temple, Raj Ghat, Kusuma Sarovar, Meera-Bai Temple, Imli Tal, Kaliya Ghat, Raman Reti, Varaha Ghat and Chira Ghat, and across the river, a short boat-ride away, is the samadhi shrine of Devraha Baba, a revered saint of the last century.

The Seva Kunj is where Lord Krishna once performed the Raaslila with Radha-Rani and asted. The samadhi of Swami Haridas, the guru of Tansen, is situated here. Every year, in his honour, Swami Haridas Sammelan is organized, in which all renowned musicians of India take part.

Another famous temple of Sri Vrindavan is Sri Kathia Baba Ka Sthan at Gurukul Road the mahant of which is known as “Brajobidehi Mahanta” and the Acharya of Swabhuram Dwara of Nimbarka sect, Sri Swami Rash Behari Das Kathia Babaji Maharaj.

Geography

Vrindavan is located at 27¡352 N 77¡422 E / 27.58, 77.7. It has an average elevation of 170 metres (557 feet).

Demographics

Vrindavan is also known as the City of Widows [due to the large number of widows who move into the town and surrounding area after losing their husbands]. According to some Hindu traditions, upper-caste widows may not remarry; so, many of those abandoned by their families on the death of their husband make their way here. There are an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 widows living on the streets, many of whom have spent over 30 years there. In exchange for singing bhajans for 7-8 hours in bhajanashrams, women are given a cup of rice and a pittance of money (around Rs.10), which they try to supplement by begging on the streets. An organization called Guild of Service was formed to assist these deprived women and children In 2000,0 the organization opened Amar Bari (My Home), a refuge for 120 Vrindavan widows, and a second shelter for 500 widows is expected to open.

TO BE RESPECTED GIVE RESPECT

Sometimes in life just a word, a sentence spoken at the wrong time, a response or lack of it can sound the death knell of a respect that has taken a lifetime to build. One unfeeling onword can bring the high esteem crashing down like a pack of cards. Suddenly you find yourself distillusioned and empty-handed, surprised at the face you saw, the entity that lurked behind the identity you thought you knew so well. Is this the friend you trusted with your deepest secrets and shared your most spontaneous laughs with? Is this the lover you gave your all to? Is this the colleague you mentored over the years and is this what he actually thinks of you? Is this the way your boss maps your career path, so at variance with your self-perception?

In an unguarded moment of passion we may reveal our innermost, darkest selves to a loved one and sometimes there’s no taking back those words or actions.

One wrong judgement could well result in loss of respect for the judiciary: one unfeeling law could mean losing respect for the government: one crude cop could result in loss of esteem for the entire department.

It is true that we all have social face that we present to rest of the world. It is only under extreme presure that our true character is revealed. Sometimes we say things in self-defense or attack a well-wisher when cornered, with verbal barbs that we may regret later, but there is no taking back words.

Each of us knows deep down what or who we really are. That however doesn’t mean that those closest to us are privy to that self or to our deepest thoughts. The problem arises if the inner self is at great variance with our social self. And someone who is suddenly exposed to a side of you they never knew existed, may not be able to get over the shock and so never regain the respect you shared in the relationship.

It needn’t necessarily be a dark side to yourself that gets revealed. Sometimes, it could just be what you really think about a wife, friend or colleague, person but have never shared with him or her. When this happens, sometimes you may lose respect for a friends, sometimes for yourself for not being perceptive enough.

Is respect then such a fragile thing? Is it so easy to lose the aspect we build most relationships on? It would seem so. It’s certainly not something that can be taken for granted. Respect, unlike regard, is something we need to work at maintaining. Or, it could snap like a thread. When we have a high regard for someone, it is more because of who they are or the group they belong to or tradition they are surrounded by. You have regard for an old man, a teacher, a boss or for a learned person. Respect, on the other hand, is what we develop for a particular trait in those we observe more closely, those closer to us. And since respect is quite often the basis of most relationships, it is important to maintain that aspect.

How often we are warned to think before we speak. And yet there are times in all our lives when we have spoken without thinking and lived to regret it! Time was when we used to think that it’s important to weigh our words so as not to hurt another. It’s only lately we realised that the greatest harm we do when we speak without thinking is to ourselves!

Total Surrender, the Elixir of Life

Do your best and leave the rest to His will. This total surrender helps one stay grounded, no matter how high one may soar in the pursuit of success. Spirituality has nothing to do with success, name or fame. It goes far beyond that. It is an inner consciousness, an inner strength.

Who are we to challenge the will of God? Whatever is beyond our control is His will. We have nor right to question. This helps one to face insurmountable tragedies with inner strength. Happiness and sadness, success and failure are different aspects of life. They are transient, ever-changing. What remains constant is inner spiritual strength. It helps one remain firm, even when one is buffeted by the tempest of life.

In the course of living life truthfully, one can be overwhelmed by the compelling, dazzling aura that surrounds entrepreneurial success. Then one wonders about the values of life. You have made all the preparations for this world. What have you done for the next?

One can have a torch that gives perfect light, but the light can fail. The battery may run out, or there may be some mechanical failure. So, one should always be ready for such an eventuality. The only certainty in life is death! Don’t wait, start now. More than payment for the good done, it’s prayers that matter most, because prayers cannot be bought. It buffers you against life’s unfortunate and unforeseen circumstances. Above all, it gives you spiritual strength and resilience to face life.

Happiness is not the destination. In fact, the journey itself can bring fulfilment and happiness, but not without the spiritual aspect. Mind, body and soul are interlinked and inseparable.

You have a right to perform your prescribed duty, but you are not entitled to the fruits of action. Never consider yourself the cause of the results of your activities, and never be attached to not doing your duty. Perform your duty equipoised... abandoning all attachment to success or failure. Such equanimity is called yoga.

Success and Failure

There is success and there is failure. There is richness and there is poverty. One day you are full of life and another day slips out of your hands. There is respect and there is insult. Life consists of polar opposites..... You will find balance in the statue of the Buddha. His eyes are half-closed and half-open. Half-closed eyes represent that one is standing just in-between, available to both the worlds– the objective and the subjective–with neither division nor judgment.

Happiness is Sleeping Well

Spiritualism or happiness is not a physical object, therefore cannot be described by labels or brands or, at the other extreme, by simplicity. Both are states of being felt by an individual. If wearing Gucci makes someone happy, that may be the person’s way of being happy. Another person might find happiness in meditation or in leading an austere life, that’s his way of achieving the same goal.

Spirtualism transcends oneself. It is a state of being where one thinks not about self-happiness but happiness of others, wellness of the environment, harmony of nature and metaphysical things such as the meaning of life, birth, death, etc. Being religious means believing in the existence of God and following a particular faith to supplant this belief.

Being rich or materialistic has nothing to do with being religious. Any one form of happiness does not preclude us from being spiritual or religious. It is left to the individual to find happiness. People wear God in amulets and pendants. That doesn’t make them non-spiritual or more spiritual; to each his own. The problem arises when one decides to wear God on, say briefs. Physical displays of disrespect should be avoided as they intrude upon other people’s beliefs and sentiments.

In the day-to-day context, it is important to do good deeds like sharing your happiness, loving others just as you would have them love you, making decisions that are holistic rather than selfish. It also means finding a purpose of living that is larger than earning and consuming and making every decision with this in mind.

The idea of happiness is being able to sleep well every night knowing that the day was well-lived and experienced to the fullest.

Members were happy to note the improvement in the finances of MERIT, mainly due to their having become a Testing Centre for TOEFL.

Mohyal Ashram at Vrindavan: Rzd. B.D. Bali informed the members that, subject to the approval of the Managing Committee, GMS proposed to purchase land at the Ashram Vihar Complex, Vrindavan, to construct a Mohyal Ashram there. Four contiguous plots, measuring about 2500 sq, yds., costing about Rs. 2.25 crores, have been identified for the purpose. The plots are well-developed, with all infrastructure facilities available, ideally located in the 40 acre Ashram Vihar Complex. Rzd. B.D. Bali added that the Mathura-Vrindavan complex was a major pilgrimage centre for Hindus and he was sure that the proposed Mohyal Ashram at Vrindavan will be immensely popular with the members of the community. He stated that this will be a New Year gift to the community. A team of office-bearers of the GMS had visited the site and were very impressed with its location and general ambience. The cost of construction of the proposed Ashram is estimated to be about Rs. 2.5 crores.

He was confident that the philanthropic members of the community will come forward and make liberal donations for the construction. He stated that donation for a room in the Ashram would be Rs. 2.5 lakhs and added that the GMS has already received 15 donations/promises of donations. The first donor was Mehta O.P. Mohan, Senior Vice President, GMS, followed by Shri B.L. Chhibber, IRS (Retd.), Vice President, Shri Vinod Dutt, GMS MC Member and President MS Khanna and Shri S.N. Dutta, GMS MC Member. Rzd. B.D. Bali also informed that he had shown the land to the Architect proposed to be engaged for the project (who, incidentally, is a Mohyal and a leading Architect of Delhi), and the latter has promised to give a beautiful design for the Ashram, keeping in view the ambience of the complex. He expected the construction to commence and be completed within the next year or so.

Dr. Rattan Datta, while welcoming the proposal, suggested that the construction of the Mohyal Ashram at Vrindavan should be eco-friendly and be as green as possible. Rzd. B.D. Bali promised that the Vrindavan Ashram will be a unique one. He hastened to add that the Haridwar Ashram also is excellent, but had the constraint of being distant. The Vrindavan Ashram, on the contrary, will be nearer Delhi and Agra, and will be ideal for a week-end pilgrimage-cum-pleasure trip.

He stated that the same norms as at Haridwar would be followed at Vrindavan, including room donors and the Langar Fund, which has been very popular at Haridwar, with not only Mohyals, but non-Mohyals also.

Shri Ashok Chhibber, while expressing happiness at the proposed Ashram at Vrindavan, informed that the Bhai Mati Dass Co-operative Thrift & Crdit Society (of which he is the President) was also acquiring a few flats at Vrindavan, for the benefit of its members and other Mohyals, especially the youth, who could be accommodated there, while on a pilgrimage/sightseeing trip to Mathura-Vrindavan-Agra. He also lauded the progress the community has achieved under the stewardship of Rzd. B.D. Bali.

On a request from Rzd. B.D. Bali, Shri Ashok Chhibber agreed that the Bhai Mati Dass society would consider making a donation of Rs. 2.5 lacs for a room in the proposed Mohyal Ashram at Vrindavan.

Shri Banshi Lal Chhibber stated that the proposed Mohyal Ashram at Vrindavan was a landmark achievement of the GMS.

Later, the house, while whole-heartedly welcoming the proposal and congratulating Rzd. B.D. Bali, gave its unanimous approval to the proposed purchase of land at Vrindavan. The house also authorized Shri O.P. Mohan, Senior Vice President, and Shri D.V. Both the functions were well-attended and hugely successful. COMMUNITY NEWS CAPSULE

ALLAHABAD

Date: 7th Dec. 2008
Venue: Residence of Lt. Col. C.S. Mehta (Retd.)
Attendance: 9 members
In Chair: Lt. Col. (Retd.) C.S. Mehta.

The proceedings of the last meeting were read out and confirmed.

Sad News: Missing the smiling presence of Mr. Jagat Ram Bali, who left this mortal world on 10th Aug., 2008, members with sad hearts expressed their feelings about the staunch Mohyali spirit, dedication and work done by the 83 yrs. old stalwart throughout his life.

Mr. J.R. Bali was Secretary, MS Allahabad, in the early fiftees and sixtees, when it first came into existence in this holy city, after partition.

Lt. Col. C.S. Mehta remembered his childhood days, when he, alongwith his father & President MS Allahabad, used to come to the Mohyal gatherings.

Members vowed to follow the path set by the departed soul to help the needy members of the biradari, personally and through the local sabha.

Baliji was always ready to help and support the biradari. After spending about twenty years in the Defence Ministry, and the C.D.A. Pune, he had come back to Allahabad on transfer in the early ninetees. Alongwith the late Mr. Vidya Sagar Mehta, he had contacted the members of the community in Allahabad and revived the Mohyal Sabha. He then served as the Vice-President and later President of the sabha. He had quit as President due to his deteriorating health but, despite health problems and old age, he was always the first to come for the meetings and expressed his views on every topic concerning the biradari in general and members in particular.

He never forgot to visit Mohyal Ashram, Haridwar every time he went for his religious yearly visit to Swarg Ashram, Rishikesh alongwith his wife Smt. Pushpa Bali. After each such visit, he shared his experiences regarding the facilities available for the visitors there and the hospitality and co-operative attitude of the management.

Members also recollected the contribution of Mr. J.R. Bali, after his retirement from Govt. service, as Founder Director of the country’s first Institute to impart Civil Services Coaching in Hindi medium in the year 1982-83. The Hindi medium correspondence courses of Utthan Pratiyogita Academy, Allahabad, not only helped and inspired Hindi medium I.A.S. aspirants but also encouraged a number of other institutes to start similar coaching in the national language in other cities.

Col. Mehta stressed the need for the younger generation to be inspired from the late respected Baliji’s versatility and dedication.
Members paid their respectful homage to the departed soul and prayed to Almighty to grant him peace and strength to the family members to bear this irreparable loss.

GMS Membership/MM Subscription: Secretary requested the members present to renew their membership of GMS and subscription of Mohyal Mitter. members paid the requisite amount to him for onward transmission to the GMS. The Secretary was also asked to remit the annual affiliation fee of the sabha to GMS.

The Maker is Within Oneself

The Creator is within you. You don’t need to search for him. He is within your soul. He gives us the answers that we seek but sometimes, we don’t care to listen.

People living in the lap of luxury often try to bribe God for more material possessions. It’s always ‘asking’ for something or the other! God does not need to be bribed; He needs to be felt. We just have to learn to listen. Listen and feel His strength–in nature’s creations and blessings like air, water, earth, fire...

Spirituality is above religion. We are truly spiritual if we do good deeds. Some people spend their entire lives in search of God. But do we really have to ‘look’ for God? Isn’t he everywhere? One can see him in every person and every object.

Happiness is something that people are constantly running after. When one thing makes them happy, they start running after another. Why? This will not bring them any calm or peace of mind, which is what every human being ultimately wants. Personally, sharing whatever little one can makes one truly happy. The affluent might feel safer travelling in bullet-proof cars, but if one is to survive, one will do so anywhere, anytime. The ‘master plan’ of a Divine Power wills everything and there are no riches on earth that can fight it. The sooner one realises that it’s better to place everything in God’s hands, the more peace one will find in life.

The Gift of Life

Life is a challenge. It is the beginning of a struggle that continues until we breathe our last breath. Life is something that we did not request. None of us asked to be born. Neither did we ask to be poor or wealthy, tall or short. We did not ask to be a part of one family as opposed to another.

Life is full of risks. There is a certain element of risk taking that is inherent in every venture we undertake; whether it is in business, or in marriage, in a profession or in athletics. We never have complete security within ourselves. For we know that every moment we live, our lives are in constant danger. A stray bullet may hit us, a car emerging out of nowhere may crush us, and a slip of the foot may result in our death. So life is unpredictable. We get no warning, we are afforded no red alert, and we get no second chance at life.

It will help us to accept life on its own terms rather than struggle against it. Identify and move from the limiting and conflicting, either/or, black or white, all or nothing, illusory perception of life to an attitude that is open to all aspects of reality. We do this by accepting life on its own terms– accepting that pleasure and pain, happiness and unhappiness are all a natural part of the human experience.

Fighting against life’s realities and adopting a stance of negativism only create unnecessary pain and difficulty in one’s life. Accepting life allows me to understand frustrations, failures and success.

Life is a force so complex that it can not be duplicated. And, most amazing and thrilling of all. He has given us minds! It is through our minds, the thoughts we think with it, and the impressions we store in it, that we are conscious of living. In short, our life becomes just what our mind makes it for us and we are just what it tells us of life!

Our mind, which thinks so ceaselessly and insistently, is the most marvelous instrument imaginable; but it is up to us to control it and to choose the kind of thoughts we think, to train ourselves in appreciating all flowers that come into our life, and deal with the weeds. We must come to terms with the silent and perennial truth that the field of human life will always consist of the good, the bad and the ugly. Finding the ugly and unpleasant mixed in with the wheat is an everyday experience and each of us has to deal with the inherent difficulties involved.

But lest we become arrogant, we also understand that not only do we live with both the wheat and the thistles but also they exist within each of us. Collectively and individually, we are capable of heart-touching kindness towards one another as well as heartbreaking evil. We are capable of building up and capable of tearing down, capable of great love and capable of seething hatred, capable of horrendous evil as well as remarkable good.

When we are able to appreciate life and accept it on its own terms we harmonise our mind with God’s mind; with the universal intelligence, power and glory. Every day live up in your own mind, mood, imagination, and sheer inner conviction. Everyday, give praise to the Author of life and glory in its wonders.
