MOHYAL MITTER
the significance of MOHYAL DIVAS OUR visionary forebears created the Apex Body, General Mohyal Sabha 117 years ago and bequeathed unto us, and the coming generations, the TIMELESS LEGACY, GMS, which has over the years blossomed and spread its aroma over the length and breadth of the country and abroad. In deep gratitude to the founding fathers Mohyal Divas is a solemn day of our obeisance, our commitment, our firm resolve to keep aloft the high moral values, the embers of progress and prosperity of our fraternity upper most in our minds. There is a wide awakening in the rank and file of the community at all levels. Prominent crusaders who laid the foundation of the erstwhile Mohyal Mitter Sabha are Bakshi Ram Dass Chhibber of Bhera, Bk. Jog Dhian Bali of Lahore, Bk. Gokal Chand Chhibber of Abbottabad, Ch. Ganesh Dass Datt of Lahore, Mehta Dehra Mal Datt of Miani, Rzd. Maharaj Krishan Vaid of Jhelum, Mehta Lal Chand Mohan of Hardowal, Ch. Ram Bhaj Datt and Shri Hira Singh Datt of Kanjrur & Rzd. Barkat Ram Vaid. Padam Shri N.N. Mohan of Mohan Meakins, whose contribution in bringing Mohyals of all shades and opinion under one flag and one platform, after the trauma of partition is noteworthy. Today, the GMS stands on a high pedestal with firm and deep roots and solid financial foundations. It is looked upon by the fraternity with solemn reverence and is the repository of the Mohyali spirit and ethos in all its manifestations. Our achievements in the field of education, of rendering succour to the needy, moral and financial aid to the ailing and for recognizing the merit of talented youth of the community, are the barometers of our success. The building of the prestigious Mohyal Ashram, the temple of the Mohyals, the Mohyal Foundation, and Mohyal Sewa Sadan, the establishment of MERIT, Mohyal Bhawan, New Delhi, are symbols of our strength, unity and solidarity. The hallmark of our impeccable integrity and the faith reposed in the GMS has been proved to the hilt by the generous donations of their properties bequeathed to GMS by the late Smt Brij Rani Vaid (Mohyal Foundation), the late Smt Kaushalaya Bali (Dehradun), and the late Major Amarnath Chhibber(Meerut). We are today a well-knit, well-organized, social organization, poised to embark upon several developmental projects in the cause of the fraternity and society in general. A silent revolution is in the making of our youth to do their utmost for catapulting the fraternity to greater heights of achievements and endeavour. Our inspiration is our president Rzd. B.D.Bali, our role model, who has always, in utter humility, advised us to espouse the cause of those in want. Mohyal Diwas is a day of celebration and gaiety to commemorate the founding of the GMS in 1891. This is the fourth year of the celebration and we have the privilege of having the Hon’ble Shri Jagmohan, former Governor of J&K and former Union Minister, as Chief Guest and the renowned historian, Mohyal Gaurav Prof. Vishwa Nath Datta, as the Guest of Honour. — narendra d. datta padma bhushan shri jagmohan former governor j&k– litterateur, reformer Padma Bhushan Shri Jagmohan is a truly many-splendoured personality. He has been an outstanding civil servant, Parliamentarian, Union Minister and original thinker and writer. Throughout his long and illustrious years in public service, he has worked, with an unmatched passion, for creating a model of fair, just and effective governance by fair, just and effecitve means. His zest for constructive work is well-known. So is his capacity to stand firmly against vested interests. He has earned a justifiable reputation for producing spectcular results on the ground.
Shri Jagmohan was the youngest Lieutenant-Governor of Delhi and the only one who held this prestigious office for two terms. During his second term, the capital had the unique distinction of successfully organising the Asiad, CHOGM and the Non-Aligned Conference (1982-83). Earlier, he served with great distinction in a number of key assignments, including that of Chief Executive of Delhi Development Authority for over seven years, and as Lt. Governor of Goa, Daman and Diu. Shri Jagmohan has also the rare distinction of being nationally honoured twice by the President of India. He was awarded the Padma Shri for “making significant contribution to the formulation and implementation of the Delhi Master Plan and for playing a pioneering role in planning and implementation of projects’’. He was also awarded the Padma Bhushan for his “exceptionally meritorious services to the country’’. He was conferred the degree of Doctorate of Philosophy (Honoris Causa) by Kurukshetra University as well as by Guru Nanak Unviersity, Amritsar. Shri Jagmohan was given a cultural award by the Australian Government. In the mid-sixties, he travelled around the world on a fellowship granted by the Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi. He also attended several United Nations Conferences on ‘Human Settlements’, ‘Habitat’, Tourism, Culture etc. Shri Jagmohan’s published works include over 600 articles in leading newspapers and journals and five books: Rebuilding Shahjahanabad: The Walled City of Delhi; Island of Truth; The Challenge of Our Cities; Soul and Structure of Government of India and My Frozen Turbulence in Kashmir, the last publication has so far seen six editions. It has been translated into many regional languages of India. Shri Jagmohan’s intellectual and literary standing can be seen from the fact that his book My Frozen Turbulence in Kashmir was described by Mr. Michael Foot, who was once the Shadow Prime Minister of Britain, as “a great book indeed and it tells me much more about Kashmir than I ever learnt from any other place’’. On the same work, Dr. Mulk Raj Anand, a noted literary critic, wrote: “It is a brilliant work, written with verve which derives its power from the author’s addiction to truth’’. His Sardar Patel Memorial Lectures, which were subsequently published under the title ‘Challenges of Our Citizens’, became a classic of Indian urban life. Shri Jagmohan has held the office of the Governor, Jammu and Kashmir, twice. He also formulated and carried out the historic reform of the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine. A household name in the country, Shri Jagmohan remained Member of Parliament for about fourteen years and Union Cabinet Minister for about five and a half years. He held charge of such significant portfolios as Communications, Urban Development, Poverty Alleviation, Programme Implementation, Tourism and Culture. Mohyal Gaurav Prof. Vishwa Nath Datta eminent author, historian Mohyal Gaurav Prof. Vishwa Nath Datta comes from an illustrious family of Dattas of Veeran Dattan. He was born at Amritsar on March 26, 1926 as the only son of Padmashri Brahm Nath Datta (Qasir), who was a renowned nationalist leader who actively participated in the freedom movement. Ch. Brahm Nath was not only a national leader, he was a very successful businessman, an orator, a writer and a poet. In addition to his multifarious activities, he was one of the founder members of the General Mohyal Sabha and had been an editor of the Mohyal Mitter. Grandfather of Prof. Datta, Ch. Guruditta Mal Datta (Musafir), was proficient both in speaking and writing English. After leaving a lucrative Government job spent his time in the service of the Mohyal Community, visiting different Mohyal Mandis as a representative of the General Mohyal Sabha, at his own expense.
Prof. V.N. Datta lost his mother, when he was only one year old. His father, a strict disciplinarian, though only 33 years old at that time, did not remarry. The young child was brought up by his eldest sister, Smt. Shanti Devi, w/o Dr. Baldev Singh, Post Graduate in Medicine from U.K., a renowned Neurologist and Professor Emeritus at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. Prof. V.N. Datta grew up at Amritsar Sugar Mill, Chheratta and Ganda Singh Wala, under the care of his sister and brother-in-law. Prof. V.N. Datta is married to Kamla, also from an illustrious Mohyal family. She is the daughter of Mehta Diwan Chand Mohan, then Senior Superintendent of Police, Karnal, and granddaughter of Rai Sahib Mehta Arjun Dass Mohan, also a Senior Police Officer, who had been the President of All India Mohyal Conference, held at Pind Dadan Khan in 1908. They have three daughters, all brilliiant and highly educated. Prof. V.N. Datta is Emeritus Professor at the Kurukshetra University. After his early education at the Government College, Lahore, and Lucknow University, he went to Cambridge, where he trained in historical studies, under the guidance of Sir Herbert Butterfield. Later, he taught History in the Delhi University and was, for some time, Editor, Indian Gazetteers, Government of India. He joined Kurukshetra University as Head of the History Department. He was later appointed Professor Emeritus of the University in 1986. He had been a Visiting Professor at the Moscow, Leningrad, Lumumba and Aden Universities. He was a Senior Fellow, National Institute of Punjab Studies, New Delhi, General President, Indian History Congress, Visiting Fellow, Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla, Resident Fellow, Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge University and Chairman, Board of Editors, National Archives of India, New Delhi. Author of a dozen of books, including Amritsar Past and Present (1967); Jallianwala Bagh (1969) (translated in Hindi and Punjabi and filmed by BBC); New Light on the Punjab Disturbance in two volumes; Sati: Widow Burning in India (published in India, England and USA); A Nationalist Muslim and India Politics (being the Correspondence Dr. Syed Mahmud) and the biography of Maulana Azad; articles contributed in Oxford University Publications. At present working on the Partition of India, and Historical Method. Prof. Dutta has recently released a book ‘Historical Diversities: Society, Politics and Culture, a collection of essays edited by K.L. Tuteja and Sunita Pathania. Many eminent historians have contributed essays for the book including Bipin Chandra, K.M. Shri Mali, Indu Banga, J.S. Grewal, Aniruddha Ray, Barun De, Irfan Habib, K.N. Panikkar, among others. The book consists of 19 essays spread over modern, medieval and ancient India and gives rather concise and indepth, introspective inspection on major historical eras. The essays have been written for Prof. V.N. Dutta who has touched lives of most of the historian contributors in some way or the other. He had delivered the Athar Memorial Lecture at Aligarh Muslim University in 2001 and the Nehru Lecture at Nehru House Mumbai, in 2002. He had been bestowed with the ‘Mohyal Gaurav’ Award by the GMS in February 1999 at the 49th Mohyal Conference for his signal contributions in the field of History and Historical Research, and thereby for making the Mohyal community proud. Prathibhashalee Vidyarthi Samman–12th Oct. 2008 The function to honour brilliant Mohyal students, who had scored 75% or more marks in their Class X and Class XII Board Examinations–2008, was held at the Mohyal Foundation, New Delhi, on the 12th October 2008. Rzd. B.D. Bali presided over the function. Fifty students of Class X and 24 students of Class XII had been selected for conferment of the award. Not all these could be present, even though individual letters had been sent to their parents/guardians, inviting them to attend the function and receive the awards. Even so, the attendance was impressive and there were more than 200 participants. The proceedings began with the lighting of the traditional lamp by Rzd. B.D. Bali and the three Vice Presidents of the GMS, followed by the Mohyal Prayer. In his Welcome Address, Dr. Ashok Lav, Coordinator of the Awards, congratulated the awardee students and their parents, for the meritorious performance in the Board examinations and hoped that this would encourage future Mohyal students also to perform even better and secure not less than 90% marks in the examination. This would stand them in good stead, since competition nowadays was fierce and one had to perform really outstandingly in order to get admission in prestigious educational institutions for higher studies. Dr. Ashok Lav noted that, just as at the national level, girl students had outperformed boys here also. Though the number of awardees were equal in boys and girls in the 10th Class (25 each), there were 13 girls as against 11 boys in the 12th Class. In his brief address Rzd. B.D. Bali observed that Prathibhashali Award has been instituted by the GMS to encourage the Mohyal students to outdo others in studies and go up the ladder of success in their career. This was the fifth year of the Award and, each year, the GMS have been raising the benchmark so that there is a greater motivation for getting the award. He congratulated the awardee students and their parents and expressed the hope that more number of students will qualify for the awards in future. He strongly felt that the young students were the real wealth and future of the community and the country and GMS should not confine itself merely to conferment of the awards but encourage the brilliant students by adopting them and giving them financial support wherever needed so that they can prosper and progress in their lives and be an asset to the community. First to be awarded were the winners of the Puneet Datta Memorial Trophy for scoring the highest marks in the Class X and Class XII examinations, with Computer Science as one of the subjects. In both the Classes, there were two joint winners each. Cash awards of Rs. 5000/- and Rs. 4000/-, respectively, were thereafter presented to the students of Class XII and Class X, being the first among the awardees, in their respective Classes. These awards have been instituted by Prof. K.G. Dutta, formerly of Phagwara, now residing in Gurgaon. Prathibhashalee awards, each consisting of a Certificate and a wrist watch, were then presented to the students. Parents/guardians received the awards, on behalf of such of the students, who could not be present. Not only the students, but their parents/grand parents were overwhelmed to receive the awards from the hands of Mohyal Ratna Rzd. B.D. Bali, so much so that even a senior Mohyal (a grand parent), much older than Rzd. B.D. Bali, was seen touching his feet. In the Open House that followed, several suggestions were made, on behalf of the students. It was suggested that GMS should provide Counseling Services to the passing out students of the 12th Class in regard to their further studies and/or choosing their careers. Another suggestion was that GMS institute awards for Mohyal students excelling in sports, music etc. Dr. Mehta, an Orthopedic Surgeon, offered to counsel those who were desirous of pursuing a medical career. Maj. Gen. K.K. Bakshi (Retd.) offered his counsing services, through the GMS, on any subject. Shri P.K. Datta stated that his pharma company can employ graduates passing out with not less than 50% marks, as Medical Representatives. Dr. Rattan Datta, CEO, Merit, informed that MERIT has got the expertise to give counseling services in any discipline. He requested the students, requiring such services to post their queries in the GMS website. He also stated that he is in a position to get admission to about 50 students for collegiate studies, in a prestigious college under the Punjab University, provided they approach him in good time, i.e., before the 30th June of the year immediately after the Class XII results are announced. A Lady Teacher of Kendriya Vidyalaya suggested some exercises to the students to overcome tension and to build up self-confidence. Shri D.V. Mohan advised the students to learn from their own mistakes, if not from the mistakes committed by others, so that the mistakes are nor repeated. He said that the first 25 years in the life of anybody were the formative years. One who works hard for these 25 years is sure to reap the reward and live the rest 75 years in great comfort and enjoyment while the reverse is true for those not properly utilizing the first 25 years of their lives. This, according to him, was as per the Law of Distant effect, one of the Universal Laws of Nature. Something that gives you immense pleasure immediately is bound to give you pain in future and something that gives you pain immediately is bound to give you pleasure in the long run. P.K. Datta congratulated Rzd. B.D. Bali for his services to the community and remarked that his stature among the Mohyals was so high that even an elderly Mohyal thought nothing strange in seeking his blessings. Ms. Sakshi Mehta, d/o Shri Yogesh Mehta, thanked the GMS, on behalf of all the students, for conferring the awards. The proceedings came to a close, with Shanti Path, after the formal Vote of Thanks from Shri O.P. Mohan, Senior Vice President, GMS. Dharam Vir Mohan Cultural Significance of Amarnath yatra njagmohan The recent controversy concerning Amarnath Yatra is unwarranted. It is more a product of pride and prejudices than of any substantial issue. The land allotted to the Shrine Board is for a specific purpose-providing basic amenities and temporary shelter to the yatris in pre-fabricated structures. It is not understood how this act would, as alleged in some quarters, change the demographic character of the State or undermine the environment on the yatra routes. On the other hand, it would make the yatra more organised and environment friendly. The waste would be taken care of at the camp sites and better administrative machinery would be available to prevent land slides and protect water bodies. In any case, safety of the ‘yatris’ is paramount. heavy rains Heavy rains and sudden hostility of the nature are not unusual in this area. It may be recalled that 256 persons lost their lives in the snow storm during the 1996 yatra. Nor should it be forgotten that India is a party to all the U.N. decisions and declarations on natural disasters and has designated second Wednesday of October every year as the International Day for ‘natural disaster reduction’. Experience all over the world shows that the nations which are vigilant are able to mitigate losses, while those casual in their approach pay a very heavy price. For example, the average Japanese disaster kills 63 people, while in Peru, disaster of the same magnitude takes as many as 2,900 lives. In 1974, a hurricane in Honduras caused the death of 4,000 people. A similar hurricane in Australia killed only 49 persons. What is no less unfortunate, controversy has diverted public attention from cultural significance of the yatra and the role that it has been playing in strengthening the fabric of national unity. Of all the Indian pilgrimages, the pilgrimage to the holy cave of Amarnath is considered to be most sacred. It is an event that tends to awaken the divinity embedded in the deep recesses of man’s mind, and he feels a soft and serene impact of the Great Spirit. Recalling Swami Vivekananda’s experience at the holy cave, sister Nivedita wrote: spiritual exaltation “Never had Swami felt such a spiritual exaltation. So saturated had he become with the presence of the Great God that for days after he could speak of nothing else. Shiva was all in all; Shiva, the eternal one, the great monk, rapt in meditation, aloof from the world.’’ Later on, Swami Vivekananda himself recounted: “I have never been to anything so beautiful, so inspiring.’’ Such is the impression that the Amarnath Yatra leaves on the minds of most of the yatris. After travelling on foot or horse on one of the most enchanting and enthralling routes in the world, which itself transmits a feeling of being “upward and divine’’, the yatri sees the “ice-lingam’’ in all its shining glory and greatness, and experiences the impact of an invisible, yet all pervading, an incomprehensible, yet all-conveying, force of “what was, is and will be.’’ In a state of heightened sublimity and with his faith fully surcharged and the awe and majesty of the sights around him, the yatri perceives, with his mind’s eye, Lord Shiva, sitting calmly underneath an imperishable canopy provided by the “mount of immortality’’, and conveying in hushed silence the message of inseparability of the processes of creation and destruction; of ‘every beginning having an end, and every end having a beginning’’. “Amarnath’’ means Deathless God - Lord Shiva. He is the God of gods, Mahadev, about whom Bhishma says in the Mahabharatha: “I am incapable of enunciating the attributes of the wise Mahadeva; who is ubiquitous but nowhere visible; who is the creater of Brahma, Vishnu, and Indra and their lord as well; whom all the deities from Brahma to the Pasachas worship; who transcends all natural phenomena as well as the absolute spirit whom the rishis who practise discipline and have arrived at truth contemplate; who is indestructible, supreme, the Brahman himself; who does not exist and yet exists’’. the holy cave The holy cave is located in one of the ‘purest and firmest peaks of the Himalayas which in the Hindu traditions is itself a symbol of sublimity, serenity and strength. And there is a very close relationship between these “silvery mountains’’ and Lord Shiva. This relationship finds best expression in the words of Sankara, when overwhelmed by the physical and spiritual beauty of the white peaks, reflected: “Oh Shiva! The body is white, white is Thy smile, the human skull in Thy hand is white. Thy axe, Thy bulls, Thy earring all are white. The Ganga flowing out in foams from Thy matted locks is white. The crescent moon on Thy brow is white. Oh all-white Shiva, give us the boon of complete sinlessness in our lives’’. full form The cave is accessible only during a short period of the year, usually in the months of July and August. At that time, inside the cave, a pure white ice-lingam comes into being. Water trickles, somewhat mysteriously, in slow rhythm, from the top of the cave and freezes into ice. It first forms a solid base and then on it a lingam begins to rise, almost imperceptibly, and acquires full form on Purnima. It is believed that on that day Lord Shiva revealed the secrets of life to his consort Parvati, the beautiful daughter of the Himalayas. It is also believed that while Lord Shiva was speaking to Parvati, a pair of pigeons appeared and overheard the talk. And this pair still comes to the cave at the time of the Yatra as incarnation of Shiva and Parvati. huge lake The present Kashmir valley, according to Nilamata Purana, was once a huge lake, known as Satidesa. It was surrounded by high mountains. To kill a demon, called Jalodhbava, who was “indestructible under water’’. Rishi Kashyap, with the blessings of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, made a cut in the mountains and drained off water. The land that emerged began to be inhabited and came to be called Kashmir, after Rishi Kashyap. At a few spots of rare beauty and seclusion, saints and gods carved out their hermitages, for meditation. In the course of time these spots acquired special sanctity and made Kashmir a great nursery of Hindu religion and culture. It cannot go unnoticed that the valley has been, and in some ways still is, the land of gods, tirthas and rishis. Vincent A. Smith has rightly observed: “Ancient India has nothing more worthy of its early civilisation than the grand ruins of Kashmir.’’ pride and purity If the yatris take the traditional route, they proceed to Pahalgam from where a small road lead in Chandanwari, along thick and green woodlands of breath-taking beauty, perched on pretty rock and little hills, with the playful stream of Udder meandering and dancing in-between, showing its white-foam sparkle with the pride and purity of a maiden descending directly from the lap of the perennial Himalayas. From Chandanwari, there begins a steep ascent to Pishu Ghati (3,171 metres), reminding the yatris that the path to salvation involves super-human struggle and stamina. A feeling of having been lifted to a heavenly spot dawns upon the yatris when they reach Seshnag (3,570 metres)– so striking is the beauty, the setting and the colours of this great Lake. Seshnag symbolises the cosmic ocean in which Lord Vishnu, the preserver of this universe, moves, reclining on a seven-headed mythical snake. After getting refreshed with the bath of ice-cold water of Seshnag, the yatri takes a steep climb to the most difficult spot, Mahagunna (4,350 metres). Thereafter, a short descent begins to Poshpathan littered with wild flowers. From there the yatris move to Panchtarni, a confluence of five mythical streams, and then to the cave. sense of fulfilment A strange sense of fulfilment seizes the yatris, and all fatigue is forgotten. Even in the temperature touching zero degree celsius, the yatris are driven by their faith to take bath in the almost freezing rivulet of Amravati. The unique Yatra satisfies the individual’s urge to take his soul to soaring heights, to experience spiritual passions of the highest order and see Mahadeva in His greatest image and in His finest abode. But the significance of the Yatra does not end at the personal level. It extends to the much larger issue of cultural unity and vision of India from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, from Kathiawar to Kamrup. Its great and historic importance as an underlying integrating force needs to be recognised. When some people talk of Kashmir’s relationship with the rest of India only in terms of Article 1 and Article 370 of the Constitution, I am surprised at their ignorance. They do not know that this relationship goes much deeper. It is a relationship that has existed for thousands of years in the mind and soul of the people, a relationship that India’s intellect and emotions, its life and Liferature, its philosophy and poetry, its common urges and aspirations, have given birth to. It is this relationship which inspired Subramania Bharati to perceive Kashmir as a crown of Mother India, and Kanyakumari as a lotus at her feet, and also made him sing that “she has thirty crore faces, but her heart is one’’. * The writer is a former Governor of J&K, former Union Minister able administrator and an intellectual par excellence. Mehta in the Mohyal Mitter of Oct., 2008. The deep wounds created by the tragedy, sixty one years ago became fresh again after six decades. Pind Dadan Khan was a great centre of Mohyal Biradari and all stalwarts living there decided to stay there after partition and were killed one and all. I agree with Sh. P.L. Mehta and also urge GMS President Rzd. B.D. Bali that GMS should observe Sept. 24, as Remembrance Day (Smriti Divas) in memory of the fraternity who were brutally massacred. I belong to Pind Dadan Khan and was 27 at the time of partition. Sub-Inspector of Police, to leave the place and accompany me to India, as the situation was most grim and she might be in trouble after 15-08-47. She refused, saying that all the Mohyals were staying back and she could not leave her hearth and home. I also met my nearest relatives, Mehta Ram Rakha Mal Mohan, elder brother of my father-in-law, Mehta Daya Ram Mohan, Malik Mehta Chand Datt, cousin of my grand father, Malik Kanshi Ram Datt, Bk. Shiv Sahai Chhibber, Retd. Inspector Police, R.S. Dina Nath Mohan and some others, but all of them were of the same view. On parting on 8.8.1947, my mother, Malkani Gur Devi, gave me handsome amount of money and all the ornaments of my wife kept with her. I parted with a heavy heart, never to meet her again in this life. All of them were brutally murdered at Kamuki as per details given by Sh. P.L. Mehta. May their soul rest in peace. —Jagmohan Lal Mehta 1137/18-C, Chandigarh, Tel.: 0172-2545654 . made for each other Our son, Shri Akil Lau, an architect, has obtained the Degree of Master of Design (Audio) from the University of Sydney, Australia, with a high first division. Mohyal has a very deep meaning. One who is out of the network of mayajal is Moh-yal. We have seen Mohyal tradition. Although, our community is quite small but we have had great warriors and freedom fighters. Today, we can see Jammu and Kashmir in the map of India. It is because of Lt. Gen. Kulwant Singh Dutta, who had brought the situation under control during Oct. 1947. Pakistani Invaders had attacked Kashmir and Maharaja Hari Singh declared to go with India and ordered Lt. Gen. Kulwant Singh to defend Kashmir. The latter obeyed the command and saved Kashmir. Many others like Lt. Gen. Z.C. Bakshi, Vice Admiral, N.P. Dutta, Col. Zorawar Singh Dutta, Major Nitin Bali, Baba Praga ji, Bhai Bal Mukand Chhibber, Bhai Parmanand Chhibber fought for their mother country and kept high the tradition of Mohyals.— CC/56-B, Hari Nagar, New Delhi-110064. sahil bali solicitor of england Shri Sahil Bali (B.E.L.L.B. Let Children be Children Welcome to 21st century India. In this country, we like to enjoy ourselves. Go out for parties, to the cinema, to restaurants and for holidays in resorts. But we like to do all of this without being inconvenienced in any way. So, we don’t want children running around and spoiling our fun. Or so it seems, judging by the increase in demand for child-free zones in several cities. People don’t just want to go to the theatre or a concert without any children around, they want to travel and dine without little devils getting in their way. How very adult! What’s wrong with that, you might ask? The way to make sure that kids aren’t making a nuisance of themselves isn’t to kick children out altogether; it’s to be better parents. Indian children can be unruly and badly behaved in public. Some would argue that’s true of many adult Indians as well. To keep children out entirely would probably make such behaviour worse, since they would not get to venture beyond the boundaries of a school playground. No doubt, parents should learn to discipline their children and teach them the rules of polite behaviour. But equally, others should allow parents some latitude in controlling their children. As anyone with any experience in the matter will attest, it’s a lot more difficult than it looks. Also, parents bring their children out not because they enjoy rocking a baby for a few hours to get it to stop crying. It’s because they don’t have anywhere to leave their children, and no one to leave them with. With nuclear families becoming the norm, it’s a rare couple that can afford to hire a babysitter who they can trust while they gallivant around town. And with the disappearance of space for children to just be children–even neighbourhood parks often forbid them from kicking a ball around–there is precious little opportunity for kids to get out. If restaurants and resorts too stop letting children in, they will have few places to go to with their parents as a full family. It was reported that in two cases, engagement/marriage has since been performed arising out of the quarterly matrimonial get-to-gethers held in March 2008 and June 2008. Instead of the quarterly match-making get-together in December 2008, the 3rd Grand Matrimonial Mela will be held at the Mohyal Foundation, New Delhi, on the 14th December 2008. Notice regarding the Matrimonial Mela has been published in the September 2008 and October 2008, as also this month’s issue of Mohyal Mitter. The next quarterly match-making get-together will, therefore, be held only in March 2009 (last Sunday of March 2009) at 11.00 AM at the Mohyal Bhawan, EG-29-30-30A, Inderpuri, New Delhi-110012. All those, desirous of finding a suitable match for their ward(s), are advised to attend the 3rd Grand Matrimonial Mela and the quarterly match-making get-togethers, where, not only lists of suitable boys and girls will be available, but their parents/guardians will be at hand for preliminary discussions. It will be better if the parents/guardians bring photos & horoscopes of the boys/girls concerned, at the get-together. Mrs. Amba Bali, Convener GMS Matrimonial Committee Bk. DR Chhibber, Secretary stay at sewa sadan Haridwar is called Hari-Ka-Dwar, so is our Mohyal Ashram which takes us near to Nature, Almighty, a place to stay peacefully and enjoy happily spending 3-4 days with your family. Recently I stayed at the Sewa Sadan for more than two months. It is a lovely place to stay for senior citizens, to spend time reading books and doing some social & religious work. Climate is good with natural beauty. Our elderly Mohyals should make a programme to stay at the Sewa Sadan once a year, at least for a month, with 3-4 more senior Mohyals. This will help them in passing time pleasantly and in making programmes to visit religious and other places. My stay at Sewa Sadan was very pleasant. I met many old and new faces. I talked with and persuaded some elderly Mohyals to do some social service while staying at the Ashram. I found two books, which impressed me very much written by Mohyals, (i) Derailment of Youth from Main Stream, Causes & Remedies by Dr. S.P. Vaid, Jammu and (ii) another booklet-by Shri P.K. Dutta. Both these books, particularly Derailment of Youth must be read by all including teenagers, youth, intellectuals, social and religious workers and teachers. The other book by Shri P.K. Dutta ji, was on Gift of Self Development. My daughter, Sulekha Dutta working in Mohyal Ashram, celebrated the marriage of her daughter Parul on 11th July 2008 there. GMS & Mohyal Ashram helped us in booking rooms and for other arrangements for the marriage and the delicious lunch on the marriage day. Our Mohyal brothers, sisters and others staying there gave their blessings. For elders, it is said that whatever good-qualities, knowledge, and wealth they possess they must give to others. Don’t be miserly. Whatever you give, Nature (Almighty) will shower on you more than that. So let us, the Mohyal elders, be in the fore - front in such activities. —J.L. Secy. fulfilment through selfless service One who serves and seeks no recompense, Finds union with the Lord. Such a servant alone takes the Master’s guidance, says Nanak. As on him is divine grace. At the beginning, mankind and the obligation of selfless service were created together. “Through selfless service, you will always be fruitful and find the fulfilment of your desires’’: this is the promise of the Creator.... Strive constantly to serve the welfare of the world; by devotion to selfless work one attains the supreme goal in life. Do your work with the welfare of others always in mind. It was by such work that Janaka attained perfection; others, too, have followed this path..... What the outstanding person does, others will try to do. The standards such people set will be followed by the whole world.... The ignorant work for their own profit. The wise work for the welfare of the world, without thought to themselves. By abstaining from work you will confuse the ignorant, who are engrossed in their actions. Perform all work carefully, guided by compassion. Angry Thoughts Have A Way Of Getting Back To You We may think that no one knows what we are thinking, but our thoughts produce vibrations that can be picked up by others at a subtle level. Once, one of Emperor Akbar’s ministers advised him to be careful about what he thought of others. The minister said, “Thoughts are very potent. Let us try this experiment. See that man coming down the road? As he approaches, I want you to think angry thoughts about him and let us see what happens’’. The emperor looked at the stranger and thought, “This stranger should be beaten up’’. When the stranger drew near, Akbar asked him, “What did you think when you saw my face.’’ “Excuse me, emperor, but I wanted to beat you up and break your head’’. No words were spoken; no actions were done, but the angry thoughts of Akbar towards the man were picked up, and the stranger was tempted to react in a violent way. We may not say anything, but our anger may create a negative vibration all around through aggressive body language, facial gestures, and angry tone of voice. This not only affects the recipient of our anger, it also boomerangs on us, disturbing our peace of mind. We can deal with anger in several ways. One way is to project the long-term consequences of our anger as a deterrent. Or set a goal and then realise the effect that anger may have in preventing us from attaining that goal. A third way is to use meditation to break the physiological response to anger. Projecting the future consequences of anger can prevent us from acting with anger. Becoming conscious of this could help us respond non-violently to situations, as did Gautama Buddha when someone abused him one day. Buddha listened patiently and since there was no reaction, the abuses stopped coming his way. If we set a goal to meditate every day, then we can guard against intrusion on that time. Say to yourself: “If I allow this anger to take control, then it is going to cause me to waste sitting and thinking about how angry I am. How can I calmly meditate and focus on what I am seeing within?’’ To have fruitful meditation we need to overcome anger, but to overcome anger we need to meditate. It is not so much a catch-22 situation, however, as it is a cycle of success. No matter what level of meditation we are at, the time we spend meditating can calm us down so that we do not respond to a situation of anger. Meditation provides us with a physiological response to control the anger. Our heartbeat slows during meditation, which has the corresponding effect of slowing down our brain waves. We enter a more relaxed state of body and mind. In such a state, anger has less chance to gain strength. As we calm down and our anger subsides, we can increase our concentration in meditation. The more time we spend in meditation, the more practised we become in being calm and balanced. langar fund n Lt. Col. R.N. Bakshi, r/o P-11/12, South Extn. Man does not suffer excessively even when one is burnt to death. When pain becomes unbearable, one loses consciousness. Those who cling to the body so very tenaciously suffer more. One who knows the truth about the Atman will have no fear of death. G.M.S. expresses its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prays to God to grant eternal peace to the departed souls and strength to their families to bear with fortitude their irreparable loss. — D.V. Mohan, Secretary General Shri ram chaman mohan n Late Shri Ram Chaman Mohan, nephew of Shri Dharam Vir Mohan, Secretary General (GMS) and son of his youngest brother Shri Karan Vir Mohan (TODI) and Usha Mohan residents and citizens of Netherlands left for his heavenly abode on March 27, 2002. Ram Chaman born at The Hague on 18th July 1986 was named as such by taking one portion of the name each from his paternal grand uncle, Mehta Ram Das Mohan, (twin brother of his paternal grandfather Mehta Lachhman Das Mohan) who had died in his infancy, and his maternal grandfather, Shri Chaman Lal Kalra. This name was given with the hope and wish that he will carry forward the name of his paternal granduncle, also. Unfortunately, this was not to be and Ram Chaman died at the young age of 16 years due to pancreas infection.
The boy was very handsome, bright, intelligent, and excellent in his studies. He was multilingual. Besides English, Hindi and Punjabi he could speak, read and write Dutch and French languages. He was frugal in his habits and had saved a good amount of money, for his higher education, from his pocket allowance. Mohan parivar decided to give these entire savings to charity. There could be no better cause than donating the un-utilised money of the child to the General Mohyal Sabha. Two Langar Funds of Rs. 11,000/- each have already been opened to commemorate his birth and death anniversaries. The family has now decided to open a trust, namely, “Mehta Ram Chaman Mohan (Hollandi) Education Fund Trust,” with an initial donation of Rs. 50,000/-. The family already has two trusts, namely, “Mehtani Lachhmi and Dr. Harnam Das Mohan Widows Fund Trust” and “Mehtani Sushila Rani and Mehta Lachhman Das Mohan Education Fund Trust.” The family has donated another Rs. 4,000/- for addition of Rs. 2,000/- each to the above-noted two trusts. Besides his grieving parents, many uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews and nieces, Ram Chaman had left behind his elder sister Kamini Mohan (GMSLM) and two elder brothers Nischit Mohan and Navin Mohan. May his soul rest in peace. “phool to do din bahare janfaza dikhla gaye Hasrat to un gunchon pe hai jo bin khile murjha gaye” Dharam Vir Mohan smt. sudershan datt (29.9.1937-23.8.08) nSmt. Sudershan Datt w/o Shri Vern Kumar Datt, r/o 11-B, Rajinder Park, Pusa Road, New Delhi-110060 left for her heavenly abode peacefully on 23.8.2008. She is survived by her husband, Shri Vern Kumar Datt, son Shri Atul Datt, daughter-in-law Smt. Charu Datt, daughter Smt. Sadhna Mohan, son-in-law Shri Rajeev Mohan, daughter Smt. Sujata Mehta, son-in-law Sh. Sanjeev Mehta and grand children Ankita Datt, Krishan Datt, Ratish Mohan, Kanika Devi Mohan, Sonali Mehta and Sahil Mehta.
She was the daughter-in-law of the late Mehta Ram Prakash Datt and the late Smt. Kaushalya Rani Datt of Kala Gujran, Distt. Jhelum, Pakistan, and daughter of the late Bhai Kulwant Singh Chhibber and the late Smt. Tara Devi Chhibber of Bhalla Karyala, Pakistan. ‘Chautha’ was performed on 26.8.2008 and ‘Kriya’ on 2.9.2008, at the Sanatan Dharam Mandir, Shanker Road, New Delhi, attended by all members of the family, relatives and friends. She was gentle, generous, religious and God-fearing, and loved by one and all. She would find a solution to any problem. She taught us the importance of concentrating on the more important things in life. Even today, when we think of her, we are filled with awe and respect. Time may hide the sadness, like a smile that hides the tears, but precious memories can never be hidden. The void left by her can never be filled. She will live and shine like a star in the heart of every one of us. Her husband expressed the following thoughts to comfort his children and grandchildren. Do not shed tears that she is gone, just close your eyes and pray and you will feel she is still with you. Your mother/grandmother will always be with you! She’s the whisper of all leaves as you walk down the street, She’s the smell of certain foods you remember, Flowers you pick and perfume that she wore. She’s the cool hand on your brow when you’re not feeling well. She’s your breath in the air on a cold winter’s day. She is the sound of the rain that lulls you to sleep, The colours of a rainbow; she is a festive morning. Your mother lives inside your laughter And she’s crystallized in every teardrop. A mother shows every emotion.... happiness, sadness, fear, Love, hate, jealousy, anger, helplessness, excitment, joy, sorrow.... And all the while, hoping and praying You will only know the good feeling in life. She’s the place you came from, your first home, And she’s the map you follow with every step you take, She’s your first love; your first friend, even your first enemy, But nothing on earth can separate you. Not time, not space....not even death! You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back. Or you can do what she’d want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.... On her sad demise her husband donated Rs.5000/- towards the Memorial Trust “Smt. Kaushalya Rani Datt and Mehta Ram Prakash Datt’’.
